DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Part-time positions teaching introductory courses in Geology and Environmental Science. Courses may include Earth Systems Science, Oceanography, Meteorology, Environmental Biology, and Climate Change. Opportunities may occasionally arise for teaching evening graduate classes in applied fields such as Engineering Geology. Compensation - Commensurate by qualifications and experience within salary range placement. The salary ranges are established by the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code = 2358 for Academic Year Lecturers). The salary range for Temporary Faculty with a Master's degree is $4,530.00 - $6,056.00 per a month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary will be adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per an academic term. Anticipated Semester The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. This is a pool of part-time lecturers for the department to draw on as necessary. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the Department. Appointments from the pool are temporary and often made just prior to the start of the academic term. Applicants may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. Department Summary The Environmental Studies Department at San José State University has over 300 majors and minors who represent a diverse student body. We offer BA and BS degrees in Environmental Studies and a BA in Global Studies. We were one of the first interdisciplinary academic departments formed as a direct response to the U.S. Earth Day in 1970 and continue to educate the next generation of environmental leaders. Department Summary The Environmental Studies Department at San José State University has over 300 majors and minors who represent a diverse student body. We offer BA and BS degrees in Environmental Studies and a BA in Global Studies. We were one of the first interdisciplinary academic departments formed as a direct response to the U.S. Earth Day in 1970 and continue to educate the next generation of environmental leaders. Our mission is to help solve local and global environmental challenges through interdisciplinary teaching and research in support of environmental sustainability and justice. DESCRIPTION: Cal Poly Humboldt and the School of Engineering (SoE) invites applications for an academic year, full-time, temporary faculty position in Engineering for academic year 2024/2025. Initial appointment will be for the Fall 2024 semester. Subsequent reappointment for Spring 2025 is expected, but will be contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluation, budget, and programmatic need. Depending on satisfactory performance evaluation, available funding, and programmatic need we anticipate renewing this position in future terms. For appointment in future terms, the faculty member must submit an application to the Temporary Faculty Pool and/or apply to other faculty vacancies at Cal Poly Humboldt, as they are available. The successful candidate will teach a subset of the following: Introduction to Engineering, Introduction to Design, Environmental Data Analysis (including probability and statistics with R), Computational Methods, Energy Systems and Technology, Systems Analysis, Environmental Impact Assessment, Air Quality Management, Thermodynamics & Energy Systems II, Capstone Design, and basic Engineering Science courses (e.g., Statics, Thermodynamics, Fluids). The candidate may be asked to teach a senior design elective in their area of expertise. RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS : This position will be filled in the Lecturer classification; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The salary schedule information for the Lecturer - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges: Lecturer A $4,530 - $6,056 Lecturer B $5,405 - $11,994 Lecturer C $6,190 - $13,172 Appointees are typically placed at the beginning of the range. The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salaries indicated in the schedules above are prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must hold either an earned BS or MS in combination with a Professional Engineering license, or and earned PhD or equivalent in Engineering or related field at the time of appointment. Candidates with experience developing curriculum/courses/programs that inclusively serve a diverse student population and facilitate community growth are especially encouraged to apply. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members in temporary positions are teaching, maintaining office hours, and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Instructional assignments will include a subset of the courses listed above. The candidate may be asked to teach a senior design elective in their area of expertise. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. GENERAL INFORMATION: The School of Engineering offers three BS degrees: Energy Systems Engineering (ESE), Environmental Resources Engineering (ERE), and Mechanical Engineering (ME) and MS degrees in Environmental Systems and Engineering & Community Practice. The ERE Program is ABET accredited and is one of the largest, oldest, and most respected undergraduate environmental engineering programs in the country. The other two BS degrees are new programs that enrolled their first students in Fall 2023. The mission of the SoE program is to create transformative learning opportunities, to develop innovative research projects, and to engage with local and global communities in collaborative work to find solutions to critical environmental, economic, and social challenges. The program emphasizes hands-on learning; SoE students engage in frequent labs, field trips, and team projects, while enjoying a cooperative learning environment. Our classes range in size from 12-70 students, although the majority of classes have fewer than 25 students. The department and university value diversity, inclusion and equity. Currently two-thirds of the tenure-track faculty are women, and two of thirteen tenure-track faculty are Latina. Many SoE students come from groups that have been historically underrepresented in engineering: 35% self-identify as coming from an underrepresented ethnic group, 37% are the first in their family to attend university, and 37% are Pell Grant eligible.
