Department Summary Created in 1968 and commenced in 1969, the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department (CCS) at San José State University educates and serves students through interdisciplinary education based on principles of social justice. CCS curriculum prepares students to critically examine and address intellectual traditions and contemporary issues resulting from political, historical, economic, and cultural constructs of race, class, and gender, and as they manifest in Chicanx and US Latinx communities. CCS at SJSU is the oldest Graduate Program in Chicana/o Studies in the United States is one of only five Graduate Programs in Chicana/o Studies in California and the only one north of Santa Barbara, California. The CCS Department offers undergraduate major and minor degrees, as well as its historic master’s degree. The CCS Department serves the College of Social Sciences (CoSS) and SJSU by offering required numerous General Education classes, including those of American Institutions, Public Speaking, and Ethnic Studies. Department Summary Created in 1968 and commenced in 1969, the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department (CCS) at San José State University educates and serves students through interdisciplinary education based on principles of social justice. CCS curriculum prepares students to critically examine and address intellectual traditions and contemporary issues resulting from political, historical, economic, and cultural constructs of race, class, and gender, and as they manifest in Chicanx and US Latinx communities. CCS at SJSU is the oldest Graduate Program in Chicana/o Studies in the United States is one of only five Graduate Programs in Chicana/o Studies in California and the only one north of Santa Barbara, California. The CCS Department offers undergraduate major and minor degrees, as well as its historic master’s degree. Temporary Faculty Pool - Lecturer in Chinese, Hmong, Japanese, Linguistics Department Overview [ Department website ] The Linguistics department provides several options in the Linguistics major, including TESL/SLAT, and also handles a number of foreign language courses and general education courses, together with service courses for the Liberal Studies program. College Overview The College of Arts and Humanities is home for students and faculty engaged in the widest range of artistic and humanistic pursuits in the San Joaquin Valley. As the heart of Fresno State, we study the artistic expression, communication skills, humanistic values, and cultural awareness that form the foundation of scholarship and creative activities. Position Summary [ Course Catalog link ] The successful applicant may teach Chinese, Hmong, Japanese, English 5A, English 5B, English 10 or Linguistics courses, as well as high enrollment general education courses. We are interested in candidates who are qualified to teach: Chinese, Hmong, Japanese, Linguistics. Part-time lecturers serve as the instructor of record for class assignments ranging from 3-15 weighted teaching units in a semester. Instructor Responsibility : Temporary faculty members are responsible for adherence to and implementation of university and system-wide policies as directed per Academic Policy Manual 306 , paragraph 2. Instructors are responsible for the preparation, delivery, conducting, proctoring, and grading (as appropriate) lectures, office hours, homework assignments, quizzes, class projects, and midterm and final exams. All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e. asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid). Conditional Appointment Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees. Appointees will be required to demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States (Fresno State is not a sponsoring agency for Temporary Faculty positions). Compensation - Commensurate by qualifications and experience within salary range placement. The salary ranges are established by the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code = 2358 for Academic Year Lecturers). The salary range for Temporary Faculty with a Master's degree is $4,530.00 - $6,056.00 per a month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary will be adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per an academic term. Anticipated Semester The temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. This is a pool of part-time lecturers for the department to draw on as necessary. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the Department. Appointments from the pool are temporary and often made just prior to the start of the academic term. Applicants may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The pool will remain in place for two academic terms; those interested in remaining in the pool beyond that time must reapply. Fall 2024: August 19, 2024 - December 23, 2024; Spring 2025: January 15, 2025 - May 23, 2025 Required Qualifications: Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.): A Master's degree in one of the following: Linguistics or English or Teaching English as a Second Language or other similar field or applicable foreign language area Experience : Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications: A commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, which may be exhibited through prior teaching experiences and teaching evaluations or other evidence.
