Position Summary Under the immediate direction of the Laboratory Technologist II, the incumbent performs a variety of standardized clinical laboratory tests, including chemical, microscopic, microbiological, hematological and other diagnostic examinations; observes and records the reactions of patients under examination, performs chemical and physical tests to identify the composition of a patient's blood, urine and various body fluids; collects specimens; performs various counts and tests; performs routine urinalysis examinations and pregnancy tests; maintains and operates instruments and equipment using established procedures; conducts routine calibration and/or standardization of instruments; conducts and records quality control measures; prepares certain solutions, reagents and media used in the laboratory; assists in maintaining laboratory inventory as needed. Consults with the Student Health Center staff physicians and/or medical providers as necessary for proper conduct of the department. Qualifications Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate possession of the following in a cover letter or attachment to the application materials: Knowledge of modern principles and practices of a clinical laboratory; Knowledge of the use and care of laboratory equipment; Knowledge of clinical laboratory quality control procedures and standards; Knowledge of current literature in the clinical laboratory field; Knowledge of regional and gross anatomy of the human body; Knowledge of the operational aspects of a full service Student Health Center clinical laboratory; Knowledge of the updated rules and regulations in laboratory safety by local, state or other authorities; Skill in all phases of clinical laboratory duties; Ability to operate and perform simple maintenance of laboratory equipment; Ability to prepare specimens for serological, bacteriological and other chemical tests; Ability to make a variety of calculations rapidly and accurately; Ability to notice pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study; Ability to identify incongruities and inconsistencies in test procedures and/or test results for a patient or medical provider; Ability to keep accurate and organized records, interpretations and laboratory studies correctly in a retrievable system; Ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to write clearly and coherently; Ability to think independently and organize effectively; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent from an accredited institution or equivalent post-seconday education, training and experience as defined by the California Division of Laboratory Science or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. License: Possess and maintain a valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license. Preferred: One year experience; experience in a small clinic setting and ASCP Board Certification; a Bachelor's degree.
