Monitors activities and performs services at the pool area to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers and customers. Provides a high level of customer service while ensuring a safe, welcoming, and fun environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Ensures guest safety by overseeing assigned areas; protects weak or distressed swimmers in times of need.
  • Effectively communicates and maintains standards of safety.
  • Enforces all aquatics rules in a consistent manner.
  • Provides exemplary customer service to all facility users.
  • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe use of the pool. Actively monitors for swimmers in distress. Assists and/or rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid and CPR.
  • Maintains order in swimming area; Inserts and removes lane lines as needed.
  • Respond quickly, intelligently, decisively and in accordance with established emergency action plan.
  • Assists with various assigned tasks such as guest check-in, cleaning and lifting objects.
  • Performs daily maintenance functions of cleaning restrooms, grounds, and building, etc. Determines chlorine content and pH value of water with water testing kit and logs information appropriately. Immediately reports unsafe equipment, facility, chemical, etc. issues to management.
  • Participates in required in-service trainings and other meetings. Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Knowledge:
  • City policies and procedures.
  • Policies, rules, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of public recreation, and aquatic programs.
  • The rules, regulations, policies, and operating procedures of City Aquatics programs.
  • Swimming pool safety rules and regulations.
  • Swimming pool maintenance, operations, and safety rules and regulations.

Skill in:
  • Promoting a positive recreation environment and good personal behavior.
  • Monitoring pool facility and guests for violations of rules and safety standards.
  • Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
  • Acting quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and general public.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age for consideration is 16 years of age. Must successfully complete a swim-test and obtain lifeguard certifications.
  • Required to maintain established performance levels

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or equivalent (Within 2 weeks of hire date)
  • Current Red Cross CPR Certification or equivalent (Within 2 weeks of hire date)
  • Current Red Cross Standard First Aid Certification or equivalent (Within 2 weeks of hire date)


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily in aquatics and recreation facilities. May be required to perform physically demanding functions. May be required to use step stools and climb ladders on occasion.
