This is Part Time, Non Permanent position

At this time, we have outstanding opportunities available, as we're looking for the "right people" to serve as Recreation Leader with the Community and Library Services Department.

This is an excellent opportunity to work for the Community & Library Services Department working under the direction of the Summer Day Camp Coordinator in the Summer Day Camp program. Candidate must be able to work the hours/days of camp: Camp hours: 8:30 am - 6:00 pm Monday through Friday, June 24th to August 30th. In addition to working regular camp hours, incumbents may also be assigned to work extended camp hours, which are from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM.

The ideal candidate must possess effective and cooperative communication and interpersonal skills and work well in a variety of environments. Excellent customer service skills and people skills are required

Hours worked per week may vary and may include evenings and weekends.

Temporary/part-time employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1 - June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law. The City does not belong to the Social Security system. However, enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7½% of base earnings to the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS). There are no rights to employment and employment may end with or without cause or advance notice. Further restrictions apply to CalPERS Retired Annuitants.

Examples of Essential Duties

With direction of the Summer Day Camp Coordinator:
  • Responds to customer inquiries
  • Disseminates information regarding the Summer Day Camp Program
  • Assists with planning and coordination of Summer Day Camp activities
  • Provides supervision of participants on excursions including overseeing the safety of participants.


The preceding functions have been provided as examples of the types of work performed by employees assigned to this job classification. The City at its discretion, may add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of : Current trends in recreation programs and activities.

Ability to : Supervise program participants in a variety of environments, while creating positive relationships within the community; provide excellent customer service to the community at all times; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; operate personal computer and related software; maintain accurate records; record and retrieve information; lift or move up to 50 pounds without assistance, as well as heavier objects with assistance.

Education & Experience : Some high school and previous experience or related training required. Volunteer service or school-related experience is accepted and should be reflected in the application.

Certifications :
  • CPR/First Aid Certificates must possess by time of appointment.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
Public Employee Disaster Service Worker: In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, all Huntington Beach city employees are required to perform assigned disaster service worker duties in the event of an emergency or a disaster.

The SALARY RANGE is composed of seven steps. Merit step increases are based on satisfactory performance.

PROMOTIONS within the City are based upon the merit system principles emphasizing individual ability and utilizing competitive examinations.
