Position Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri State Parks, Cultural Resources Management Program and will be located at 1659 E. Elm, Jefferson City, MO 65101
What you will do: - Plan and conduct archaeological surveys to ensure projects do not damage archaeological resources.
- Review Cultural Resource Clearances and prepare Section 106 submittals for review by the State Historic Preservation Office within established time frames to afford protection for cultural resources.
- Provide training to staff on cultural resource preservation topics.
- Infrequently and when appropriate, direct archaeological excavations
- Prepare scopes of work for contracted archaeological services and review contractor work and products
Desired Characteristics: To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills/competencies:
- Research: Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
- History and Archaeology: Knowledge of historical events and their causes, indicators, and impact on particular civilization and cultures, and of preservation and archival techniques.
- Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
- Flexibility: Is open to change and new information; adapts behavior or work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles; effectively deals with uncertainty.
- Self-Management: Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.
Equivalent to those typically gained by:
- Master's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field as required by Secretary of the Interior's standards
AND
- one or more years of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration or management; at least four months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archeology and demonstrated ability to carry research to completion. In addition to these minimum qualifications, a professional in prehistoric archeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources of the prehistoric period. A professional in historic archeology shall have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources of the historic period. Experience with ArcGIS, knowledge of Section 106 and other federal and state historic preservation laws, ability to use archaeological tools for shovel testing and occasional excavation and the ability to be able to work outdoors in a wide variety of weather conditions preferred.
