The City of Placentia is seeking dynamic, enthusiastic, and water-loving individuals to join our team as Lifeguards, Instructor Guards, and Senior Instructor Guards for our thrilling summer aquatics program. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  • Interviews and swim assessments are scheduled for Saturday, April 20, 2024 AND/OR Saturday, May 4, 2024.
    • PRE-EMPLOYMENT - Candidates hired will start the pre-employment process immediately and will consist of a live-scan, drug abuse testing, Tuberculosis (TB) test and physical (provided by City). All pre-employment clearances must be completed by the end of May 2024.
    • ONBOARDING - Onboarding/new hire orientations will take place during the first week of June 2024.
    • TRAINING WEEK - First day of employment will commence on June 17 for training week;
    • SUMMER PROGRAMS BEGIN - June 26.
The City will provide the required CPR/First Aid/AED Certification training courses required for this position at no cost to employees; however, one-day training will be offered in June only. Employees who cannot attend will be responsible obtain this training on their own time and expense. Employees under 18 and in high school must obtain a work permit.   • INSTRUCTOR GUARD - Make Waves as a Swimming Superhero! Calling all water wizards! As an Instructor Guard, you will be the guiding force behind teaching basic strokes and lifesaving techniques. Your mission? To empower individuals of all ages to conquer the water with confidence. Dive into the world of aquatics instruction, where every lesson is a chance to inspire and create a new generation of water enthusiasts.
  • SENIOR INSTRUCTOR GUARD - Lead the Aquatic Revolution! Are you a certified aquatics maestro with a passion for teaching? The Senior Instructor Guard role is your stage to shine! Take the lead in instructing a variety of swimming and lifesaving classes for ages 9 months to 12 years. Your expertise and knowledge of training methods will make waves as you oversee pool safety and inspire the next wave of aquatic champions. Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & CERTIFICATIONS

LIFEGUARDS
  • EXPERIENCE: Lifeguard and/or prior aquatics experience, including working with children/youths IS DESIREABLE.
  • EDUCATION: Must be at least 15 1/2 by June 1, 2024, and obtain a high school work permit if under the age of 18 years IS REQUIRED.
  • CERTIFICATION: Must have or be able to obtain CPR and First Aid for Professional Rescuer certificates IS REQUIRED.
INSTRUCTOR GUARDS
  • EXPERIENCE: Lifeguard and/or prior aquatics experience, including working with children/youths IS DESIREABLE.
  • EDUCATION: Must be at least 16 by June 1, 2024, and obtain a high school work permit if under the age of 18 years IS REQUIRED.
  • CERTIFICATION: A valid CA driver's license AND have or be able to obtain CPR and First Aid for Professional Rescuer certificates AND Water Safety Instructor certificate IS REQUIRED .
SENIOR INSTRUCTOR GUARDS
  • EXPERIENCE: Minimum 2 years of experience as a Lifeguard and/or prior aquatics experience, including working with children/youths IS REQUIRED.
  • EDUCATION: Graduation from High School or GED equivalent & completion of college-level coursework in recreation, sociology, public administration, or a closely related field IS REQUIRED .
  • CERTIFICATION: A valid CA driver's license AND have or be able to obtain CPR and First Aid for Professional Rescuer certificates AND Water Safety Instructor certificate IS REQUIRED .

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
May be required to work different shifts, weekends, and holidays. Depending upon position assignment, may require a valid Class C California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's Vehicle Insurance Policy. Must be able to provide a valid work permit.

Important Information - City employment is contingent upon passing substance abuse testing and a fingerprint clearance. Employees must show proof of verification of the right to work in the United States. The most qualified candidates will be invited to the next phase of the recruitment process.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS

Maintain aquatic physical fitness, including the ability to swim 300 yards, tread water, and lift, retrieve, and move over 100 pounds, including heavier swimmers; and maintain stamina. Ability to exert moderate physical effort in standing and walking, and stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and carrying, pushing, or pulling objects. Ability to lift and carry pool equipment, supplies, and furniture weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring simple and periodic adjustments, such as copiers and phone equipment and common audio-visual tools.

Sensory demands include the ability to talk and hear; see within normal range and ability to use close vision and adjust focus. Ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of colors, forms, sounds, odors, textures with job-related objects and materials, as well as human appearance and behavior.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee works outdoors and is exposed to variable weather conditions. May be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatic facility, as well as blood and body fluids rendering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Employees may interact with upset facility users while enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

Retirement - California Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) PST Deferred Compensation Plan. Contribution to this account is 7.5% per pay period, the City pays 3.75% and the employee pays 3.75% deducted from salary. Additionally, e?????mployee pays 1.45% ???????towards Medicare per paycheck.

Part-Time Sick Leave -24 hours of sick leave per fiscal year with a banked max of 48 hours.
