Overview:

 

Assistant Engineer I: $106,496.00 - $136,240.00 annually

Assistant Engineer II: $117,520.00 - $150,446.40 annually

 

The Assistant Engineer I/II is under general supervision, performs a variety of engineering assignments in support of the planning, design and operation of the Valley Water's treatment facilities and pipelines including, but not limited to, conducting engineering studies and preparing, reviewing, and /or commenting on reports, designs and specifications, provides engineering support in the source water monitoring and water treatment plants and water purification facility operations and performs a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

 

Based on the candidate's qualification, we may hire at level I or level II for this vacancy.

 

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Act as the Assistant Water Quality liaison to one of our three Water Treatment Plants or Silicon Valley Advanced Purification Center. Providing process engineering support with respect to treatment process optimization, troubleshooting, water quality goals, research and drinking water regulatory compliance.
  • Assist with source water quality and protection programs, and other related assignments to ensure compliance with federal and state standards and regulations.
  • Provide support to responding to inquiries from internal and external groups on water quality and related issues.
  • Provide water quality support to capital and maintenance projects.
  • Support pipeline disinfection and dichlorination.
  • Provide support to Water Quality Unit's research program on pilot and full-scale treatment studies.
  • Provide support for tracking source water conditions and treatment plant performance evaluation.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other units, agencies, and the public, and maintain organized and accurate documents and files.
  • Ensure adherence to professional engineering codes, standards, and policies.

Ideal Experience:

 

  • No experience required for Assistant Engineer I. Two years of professional engineering experience required for Assistant Engineer II.
  • Field experience with a water utility is ideal.

Assistant Engineer I - Civil

Ability to:

 

  • Apply engineering principles, practices, concepts, and standards to engineering problems.
  • Apply water resources principles, practices, concepts, and standards to water supply, operations, and water quality problems.
  • Prepare, understand, and interpret specifications, drawings, and other engineering documents.
  • Perform engineering and statistical calculations. Analyze, interpret, summarize, and present technical information and data in an effective manner.
  • Learn to interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations, and engineering policies and procedures.
  • Learn to conduct engineering research projects, evaluate alternatives, make sound recommendations, and prepare effective technical reports.
  • Use office equipment including computer equipment and specialized software applications programs.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Make sound, independent decisions within established policy and procedural guidelines, and best engineering practices.

Assistant Engineer II - Civil

In addition to the qualifications for the Assistant Engineer I - Civil:

 

  • Independently conduct comprehensive engineering studies, investigations, and analyses.
  • Interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations, and engineering policies and procedures.
  • Conduct engineering research projects, evaluate alternatives, make sound recommendations, and prepare effective technical reports.

 

Ideal Knowledge:

Assistant Engineer I - Civil

Knowledge of:

 

  • Principles, practices, concepts, and standards of source water, water treatment and water quality.
  • Principles, practices, theories, and methods of water supply, water treatment and water quality.
  • Practices of researching engineering issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting effective and technical reports.
  • Office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.
  • English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Principles and techniques by effectively dealing with the public and colleagues.

 

Assistant Engineer II-Civil

In addition to the qualifications for the Assistant Engineer I - Civil:

Knowledge of:

 

  • Principles and practices of project management and contract administration.
  • Recent and on-going science and engineering developments in water quality and water treatment.
  • Applicable federal, state drinking water regulations.

 

Ideal Training and Education:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil/environmental or related engineering or science field.

 

OR

 

Possession of a valid California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate with two (2) years of associated paraprofessional engineering experience.

 

Required License or Certificate

 

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license. Individuals who do not meet the driver's license requirement due to a disability will be considered for a reasonable accommodation on a case-by-case basis.

Water Quality Unit (Position Code 470)Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date. This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite.
