Job Description

Summary

This position is budgeted to start at $18.56 per hour.

This is a non-benefitted, budgeted position limited to 999 hours per fiscal year. This is not a PERS eligible position.

The City of Escondido is hiring dynamic team leaders for the position of Head Lifeguard in our year-round Aquatics Program. Applicants must be available a minimum of 15 hours a week and ability to work mornings and weekends. Key responsibilities include:
  • Lead and maintain service standards over Lifeguards and Swim Instructors.
  • Demonstrate preventative lifeguarding skills.
  • Activate Emergency Action Plan, rescue swimmers in distress, and render first aid as needed.
  • Provide through documentation for necessary forms and reports.
  • Enforce pool rules and regulations.
  • Maintain positive public relations, and be knowledgeable in Community Service programs.
  • Report pool repairs as necessary to supervisors.
  • Maintain safe and clean conditions in pool and bathroom areas.
  • Demonstrate proper cash handling skills, and maintain an accurate till.
  • Register participants in recreation software.
  • Lead, participate, and assist in-service trainings and head guard meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.


The ideal candidate for this position will:
  • Have two years of experience working as a lifeguard at a multiuse aquatic facility.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills, and the ability to lead an aquatics team.
  • Enjoy working outdoors with the public and be a positive ambassador for our Aquatics program.
  • Have a willingness to learn and grow as a leader and professional as a representative of the City of Escondido Aquatics Team.


Minimum requirements:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • One year of experience as a lifeguard is required. Two years of experience as a lifeguard is highly desirable.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training or equivalent.
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
  • Title 22 Certification.
  • Certification with Starfish Aquatics highly desirable.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly desirable.


Certifications are not required at time of interview. Current certifications required upon hiring.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
Applications will be screened and the most qualified candidates will be invited to appear for testing. All positions require the ability to read, write and speak English. Types of tests may include written and/or oral examination, physical agility, practical exam or other appropriate job-related selection process. When testing is completed, candidates will be ranked on an eligibility list in the order of their test score. Selection for appointments is made from names certified on the eligibility list.
All appointments are subject to the successful completion of background investigation including LIVESCAN fingerprinting, and will be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States. Qualification by a medical examination will be required at the time of appointment. After appointment, classified employees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period to be eligible for regular status. In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all new employees must produce proof of eligibility to work in the United States within the first three days of their employment. The City of Escondido participates in E-Verify®.
The Loyalty Oath will be administered to all new employees on their first day of hire. New employees hired into positions that require a driver's license must provide proof of a valid California Driver's License of the appropriate class level on their first day of employment.

Guard and Reserve active duty for training purposes does not qualify for veterans' preference.
