STATE HISTORIAN II - CULTURAL RESOURCES DIVISION / HISTORIC PROPERTIES PROGRAM

The reporting location for this position is at State Parks Headquarters, Sacramento, California. This position will work under the direction of the Historic Properties Program Supervisor.

The Historic Properties Program assists 21 districts, comprising 280 Park units, in fulfilling the Department's mission. As part of the Historic Properties Program, the State Historian II utilizes their expertise in the practice of history, and their knowledge of pertinent law and regulation, to review and comment on, or prepare, documents addressing cultural resources/historic property identification, evaluation and treatment, and to offer recommended actions and regulatory guidance that may assist in preserving or otherwise addressing historic properties. The Historian II directs, coordinates, and prepares nominations of built environment resources and manages heritage property registration datasets. The incumbent will serve as the Department's National Historic Landmarks liaison with the National Park Service. The position requires intermittent travel throughout the state to support cultural resource management needs across Park units and occasional irregular work hours.

Training and Development Assignments may be considered.

This position is designated as telework eligible-remote centered.

To be appointed you must satisfy one of the following requirements:
List Eligibility - Successfully complete the civil service exam for classification State Historian II. There is currently no open exam for the classification. Check back at a later date here . Transfer Eligibility - Must have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and associated links above). Reinstatement Eligibility - Previously obtained permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and associated links above).
In some special circumstances, candidates who meet the Minimum Qualifications for the position, but who do not have one of the types of eligibility listed above, may be hired. However, this is rare, and the preferred method of appointment is through eligibility as described above.
