ABOUT THE POSITION

The Marin County Probation Department is currently accepting applications for one vacancy which may be filled at the level of Juvenile Corrections Officer I (JCO I) or Juvenile Corrections Officer II (JCO II).

Note: To be considered for the JCO I level you must submit a separate application for that position. Candidates who meet requirements for this position may be considered for future regular-hire JCO I vacancies in the department.

JCO II’s provide supervision, custody and care of minors detained in the Marin County Juvenile Hall following established policy and procedure. Juvenile Corrections Officers play an important role in initiating the process of change and making each juvenile’s detention as positive and productive as possible. In this position, you may also:
  • Direct recreation, work assignments and daily activities of detainees.
  • Maintains security and conducts inspections of living quarters during waking hours.
  • Conducts visits with juveniles and their families.
  • Liaise and participates in casework with detainees' Probation Officers.
  • Facilitates group and individual counseling and offers support, guidance and direction to juveniles.
  • Maintain daily logs, create incident reports, and document client behavior, progress and complaints.
  • Maintain an awareness of security and disciplinary needs.
  • Transport juveniles to hospital or other locations.
  • Administer drug tests for juveniles as required.
  • Provides guidance and acts a resource to other staff on an assigned shift.
  • Assists with admission and release procedures during assigned shifts.
JCO II’s are distinguished from the JCO I level in that JCO II’s are expected to perform the full range of duties independently within specific laws, policies and procedures and may assist in training JCO I’s.

ABOUT YOU

The Highly Qualified Candidate: The highly qualified candidate possesses a combination of education and experience that provides a general understanding of the issues surrounding a juvenile population in a criminal justice setting. They have experience monitoring the health and well-being of a group of youths with consideration for behavior patterns and the social, economic and cultural factors of the population. They can identify problems, assess alternative courses of action and exercise sound reasoning in order to arrive at logical conclusions. In addition, the ideal candidate must have personal and professional integrity; be highly organized; possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills; approach their work with enthusiasm; demonstrate a strong commitment to empowerment through communication, collaboration, and cooperation.

Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of 60 semester units from a college or university which included a minimum of 12 semester units in behavioral sciences, social welfare, social case work, counseling and guidance, psychology, criminology, corrections, education, recreation, or a closely related field.

In addition to the above, equivalent to one year of experience in group supervision and counseling of minors in a detention setting at a level equivalent to the County’s class of Juvenile Corrections Officer I.

Certificates and Licenses:
Willingness and ability to obtain certificates in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and Search and Arrest Procedures as required by California State Penal Code Section 832 prior to completion of the one-year probation period.

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s license is required and must be maintained while employed in the classification.

Special Requirements:
California Government Code Section 1031 requires that all applicants:
  • Be 21 years of age or older by the application filing deadline date.
  • Have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness (felony law convictions will be disqualifying).
  • Be a citizen of the United States (or must have filed for citizenship with the Department of Immigration one year prior to employment application date).
  • Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
  • Undergo a complete background check conducted by the Probation Department
  • Complete and pass a comprehensive psychological test administered by the Probation Department or designated agency.
The California State Board of Corrections, Standards and Training Commission (BSCC) requires completion of the Core Standard and Training for Corrections (STC) to perform duties of this position.

Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
