Job Description:

Overview

To install, repair and maintain the City's irrigation systems in roadway medians, parks and other areas covered by the City of Sarasota's landscape maintenance responsibilities.

Essential Functions
  • Installs, adjusts, repairs and replaces irrigation systems.
  • Plans and schedules work to provide for preventive maintenance and efficient performance to quickly locate and repair broken pipes, irrigation heads, etc. to reduce water loss and assure proper operation of systems.
  • Adjusts, resets, repairs or replaces irrigation controllers and/or valves.
  • Programs, monitors and adjusts computer controlled irrigation systems.
  • Operates irrigation truck, trencher, backhoe and other mechanical equipment used in the operation, repair and maintenance of the systems.
  • Maintains a stock of repair parts, irrigation heads, tools and other components and supplies used in the work.
  • Meets with other city and private utility company personnel to obtain information on meters, utility lines and other needed technical data to locate, repair and install irrigation systems.
  • Maintains contacts with vendors and contractors to obtain information about available valves, irrigation heads and other system components.
  • Compiles and prepares necessary maps, reports and records.
  • Performs strenuous work in a variety of weather conditions including high heat conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and experience equivalent to completion of high school or equivalent. Three years of experience in the installation, replacement, repair and maintenance of irrigation systems. Must possess a valid State of Florida Driver's License. The ability to possess and maintain a valid Class "B" or higher State of Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of employment.

Job Based Competencies
  • Working knowledge of components of irrigation systems including pipe, pumps, irrigation heads, valves, controllers and other parts.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and communication cable hookups used in the operation of the irrigation systems.
  • Ability to make simple electrical repairs.
  • Ability to operate irrigation trencher, backhoe, truck and other necessary hand and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual labor required to dig trenches, install pipe and valves.
  • Ability to remove and replace turf, shrubs and plants without damage as needed in system installation, repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to work overtime and/or be on call.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.


Responsibility

Under the direction of and responsible to the Department Head or designated representative. May plan, assign and direct the work of others on large projects.

Physical Requirements

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Position requires considerable physical activity including walking, lifting, reaching, stooping, standing, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, and crouching. Incumbent is subject to inside and outside activities with no effective protection from weather conditions. Visual acuity is required to inspect and operate automotive equipment. Position requires hearing sufficient to accurately perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Manual dexterity is required to operate equipment in the performance of duties.

Contacts are with vendors, contractors and occasionally with other members of the public to obtain information as to availability of irrigation equipment and supplies.
