SALARY

Engineer I: $35.13 - $42.71 / Hourly

Engineer II: $40.41 - $49.11 / Hourly

The current vacancy is in the Building Division of the Development Services Department.

These are multi-divisional classifications, and the positions may be hired for different divisions in different departments. Engineer I: Under general supervision, performs entrance-level professional civil engineering work in connection with surveying, designing, construction, and maintenance of Public Works projects and surface water and groundwater projects; and performs other work as required. Engineer II: Under supervision, this class performs work of average difficulty involving technical and professional work making design layouts, engineering calculations, and miscellaneous studies in the City Engineering Department; work involves the preparation of design layouts, sketched details for construction work, and the performing of engineering calculations for areas, loads, stresses, flows, and other technical criteria; tasks include the inspection of construction or maintenance work on public streets and other facilities; work is performed under the general supervision of an advanced engineering position that reviews accomplishments through conferences and inspections; and performs other work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Applications will be accepted only from those applicants who clearly and completely demonstrate on the COMPLETED City Application, Supplemental Questionnaire, Resume, and Certificate(s) that they meet the below requirements:

Engineer I:
  • Graduation from an accredited college with a degree in Engineering; OR
  • Possession of a valid certificate as an Engineer in Training by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers may be substituted for the required education. A copy of the EIT certificate must be turned in with the application and resume by the filing deadline for the application to be accepted

Engineer II:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in civil engineering; AND
  • Engineer in Training (EIT); AND
  • Minimum one year experience in the practice of civil engineering; or possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training Certificate from the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers; AND
  • Minimum two years’ experience in the practice of civil engineering

Both the I and II positions must meet the following:

  • Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license

Examination (Weighted: 100%)

May 15, 2024 (Tentative) The method of examination may include one or more of the following: written exam; oral exam; evaluation of education, training, experience or other qualifications as shown by the application; or by other information submitted, or by the record; questionnaires submitted to references; or any other appropriate measure of fitness. A minimum passing score of 70% is required. NOTE: Admission to the Examination may be limited to those applicants who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admittance to the Examination. VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.

INSURANCE: The City and the employee share contributions for premiums for health insurance coverage. The City provides life insurance benefits based on bargaining unit. Visit the City's Employee Benefit website for detailed information (rates and plan information).

RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement websitefor additional information.
