ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY: The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DEFINITION:
Under direct supervision, provides basic or standardized physical, occupational, or recreational therapy exercises and treatment procedures assigned by a physical or occupational therapist to assist acute, rehabilitative, or psychiatric patients with mental or physical disabilities to attain, regain, or maintain physical or mental functioning or to adjust to their disabilities.

Essential Job Functions

Assists in performing treatments and procedures assigned by the therapist such as basic, routine, and repetitive exercises designed to maintain and restore strength, prevent contractures, or maintain mobility of joints.

Reviews the treatment plan and uses at least two patient identifiers prior to performing any treatments. Accurately identifies the individual as the person for whom the service is intended and match the service to that individual.

Assists in the instruction of patients in transfer training, gait training, ambulation practices, functional activities, or in utilization of special assistive or adaptive devices.

Assist in demonstration and instructing patient and care-givers on methods of performing such tasks as range of motion and transfer techniques, including special methods of positioning and moving patients with unusual problems.

Reassures patients and encourages participation in procedures and performance.

Observes and monitors patients' conditions and progress during treatment, and provides continuous feedback to the therapist as to the progress and reactions of patients to treatment and procedures or of malfunctioning equipment.

Participates in the instruction and Orientation of Therapy trainees and non-professional students regarding the daily functions in the Rehabilitation Department and treatment procedures.

Assists in preparing adaptive equipment for patients by using power and manual tools to construct devices.

Utilizes and demonstrates to patients the use and operation of exercise equipment and modalities used for stretching and strengthening muscles, or for improving body coordination or muscle restraining; adjust and maintains patient equipment.

Maintains inventory, assist in ordering and organizes storage.

Makes entries in records and computers correctly spelled, neat, orderly, properly identified and labeled, as needed.

Performs documentation accurately and thoroughly according to department guidelines, using approved abbreviations and terminology.

Assists with registration desk coverage, greeting and registering patients while updating the Orchid system so that the patient demographic information is current and correct.

Answers telephone by the third ring, directing all incoming calls to appropriate staff in a professional, efficient manner endeavoring to maintain excellent public relations.

Schedules patient appointments and updates clinicians' schedules via computer accurately and efficiently within clinic guidelines. Reschedules appointments with efficiency and in a timely manner.

Participates in cleaning and maintenance of treatment areas and equipment in accordance with Infection Control Policies.

Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA laws, regulations, and department policies and procedures at all times.

Participates in Departmental meetings and DHS mandatory trainings.

Participates in department/Unit Based/Quality Improvements/Risk Management programs inclusive of monitoring of indicators, problem identification and resolution.

Requirements

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

Option I : One (1) year of experience in a medical care setting involving direct patient care.

Option II : Completion of an aide technician training course* and six (6) months of experience.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
*In order to receive credit for any college course work or for completion of a training or certificate program, you must include a legible copy of the official transcripts from the accredited institution which shows identifiable course titles or certificates of completion of training; with your application or within 15 calendar days of filing. Applications submitted without the required evidence of certification will be rejected.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of three (3) semester units or four (4) quarter units in human anatomy or exercise physiology courses*.
  • Current certification* in accordance with the American Heart Association's Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) for Healthcare Providers.

Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess the desirable qualification in excess of the Selection Requirements.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This examination will consist of an evaluation of education, experience, and desirable qualifications based upon application information weighted 100%.

CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE ADDED TO THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

Eligibility Information:
Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

Special Information:
Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
