RECRUITMENT IS OPEN TO CURRENT PERMANENT CITY OF FRESNO FIRE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES ONLY.

The City of Fresno Fire Department is currently recruiting for Firefighter Specialist. Firefighter Specialist is the technical working level class in the fire service. Incumbents may drive and operate fire apparatus; perform skilled and technical fire suppression and prevention activities; conduct fire prevention inspections; test fire equipment and conduct fire investigations.

Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of one (1) year from the date of promulgation. Pursuant to FMC Section 3-247, this list may be extended for up to one (1) additional year.

The Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for participation in the examination process and does not guarantee placement on the eligible list:

Currently working as a permanent employee in the Fresno Fire Department, FMC 3-219. Any questions concerning employment status should be directed to the Personnel Services Department;

AND

Three (3) years of continuous service as a Firefighter with the City of Fresno Fire Department;

AND

Incident Command System 200; California State Fire Marshal Driver Operator IA; California State Fire Marshal Driver Operator IB; California State Fire Marshal Firefighter II certificate;

AND

Signed off as a qualified Acting Engineer in accordance with FFD Administrative Manual Section 101.004 Acting Policy;

AND

Possession of a valid EMT Certificate from the Central California Emergency Medical Service Agency (CCEMSA).

AND

Possession of valid Class A, B or C California Driver's License with appropriate firefighter endorsements. If qualifying with a valid Class A or B California Driver's License, must be without air brake restriction.

Applicants must attach documentation of all certifications, licenses, and sign-offs for items to be considered for qualification.

Additional Requirements

Complete the Probationary Fire Engineer Task Book and associated Performance Requirements as listed in the Training and Equipment Manual Section 326.001 Probationary Fire Engineer Task Book prior to the end of probation in this classification.

Firefighter Specialists assigned to the Fire Investigative Services Unit must successfully complete a polygraph test, psychological examination, and an extensive background investigation prior to appointment.

Selection Process

Candidates must achieve a passing score on all parts of the examination process to achieve placement on the promotional eligible list. Failure to receive a passing score in each part will result in the candidate failing the competitive process per FMC Section 3-237.

The examination process may consist of the following:

Oral Examination (weighted 25%):
A panel of subject matter experts will conduct a job-related oral examination which may evaluate each candidate's knowledge of the operation and maintenance of modern firefighting apparatus equipment, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public, and other knowledge, skills, and abilities as they relate to a candidates training, experience, and qualifications for the position of Firefighter Specialist. Candidates must achieve a passing score in the Oral Examination to be invited to the Performance Examination.

The Oral Examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of May 20, 2024.

Performance Examination (3 parts, each weighted 25%):
A panel of subject matter experts will conduct job-related assessments to evaluate a candidate's ability to perform a set of job-related exercises. The Performance Examination will consist of three parts, each weighted 25% and will consist of pumping operations, aerial ladder operations, and operating fire equipment and apparatus through an obstacle course. Candidates must achieve a passing score in each part in order to achieve placement on the promotional eligible list.

The Performance Examination is tentatively scheduled for the week of June 03, 2024.

Passing scores of all parts will be combined and will be used to determine your final score and placement on the eligible list.

Once the eligible list is established, the appropriate number of candidates pursuant to FMC 3-252 (a) 2, will be certified to the Fire Department. Prior to selection, all certified candidates will be invited to an interview with the Fire Chief. The Fire Chief will consider the candidate personnel file, work history, training records and interview to assess their readiness for the position of Firefighter Specialist.

The City reserves the right to amend any phase of the examination process should there be a limited number of successful candidates.

Veteran Preference Regulations

Veteran's preference credits are not given for promotional examinations.
