Position Description

Perform specialized high level technical support and design work, act a liaison with other parties for the Professional Engineer in the field, and act as lead worker on a field crew performing construction inspection.

Work Location: This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work with some days working remotely and some days working in the office or field.

The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applicants for work visas.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Act as the engineer's field representative for communication with the Construction
Crew Foremen (both City Staff and private vendors, public agencies, utility companies) on a construction site.
• Inspect and ensure site safety compliance.
• Communicate any deviations discovered in plans, specification, materials, methods, schedules, or MNDOT specifications to the Engineer.
• Assist in design work using computer assisted design (CAD).
• Assist in preparation of paperwork and documentation for new bridge construction and bike path construction activities.
• Coordinate survey work by City Survey team.
• Coordinate closely with contractors on work which can affect adjacent businesses or property owners.
• Coordinate materials testing with contractors, MNDOT, and the City of Minneapolis Engineering Lab.
• Perform contract administrative duties by tracking daily the following:
o Personnel hours for the general and sub-contractors.
o Payroll and prevailing wage compliance.
o Work progress
o Weather
o Equipment in and out and special circumstances.
• Prepare weekly reports using excel spreadsheets.
• Measure and track material quantities.
• Enter and maintain records using modern software.
• Assign work to lower level staff, providing training and instruction as required.
• Perform a variety of engineering technician work in the office regarding construction project design, cost estimation, calculations of cost, handling communications, completing forms, etc

• Perform other work as assigned

Engineering Tech III Duties - Transportation Engineering and Design - Roadway Group
• Create engineering design construction plans using computer-aided drafting/design (MicroStation) software following the City of Minneapolis and MnDOT standards.

Work hours are from 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. Primarily hybrid work with some days working remotely and some days working in the office. Office work with site visits to review current on-street conditions associated with various requests.

Engineering Tech III Duties - Construction Inspection - Bridge Group
• Preparation of partial payments and change orders

Typical work hours are 7:00 am-3:30 pm, with overtime, longer weekdays, and Saturdays during the construction season. During the construction season, most of the work will be outdoors.

Working Conditions: Combination of office and field.

These current vacancies are located in the Transportation Engineering & Design Division in the Public Works Department.

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Eighteen months of post High School training in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent training in Civil Engineering Survey work

Minimum Experience:
Three years of related experience performing civil engineering and related technical work

Licenses/Certifications:
Valid Driver's License.
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Selection Process
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. The City of Minneapolis Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.

Background Check
The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check may be necessary for certain positions with this job title. Applicants may be required to sign an informed consent form allowing the City to obtain their criminal history and/or verify their qualifications in connection with the position sought. Drug and Alcohol Testing
All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position.

Eligible List Statement

• Considerable knowledge of Civil Engineering survey techniques and tools and technology used in this work.
• Good communication skills and the ability to delegate work.
• Good knowledge of Civil Engineering, drafting, and related computer software packages.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
• Good writing skills and ability to produce reports.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and high elevations.
