This position will be located at Missouri Geological Survey Office, 111 Fairgrounds Rd, Rolla. Ability to work outdoors for long hours in all seasons, with some overnight travel required.

  • Complete dam safety inspections under guidance from a registered professional engineer
  • Complete hydraulic and hydrology reviews under guidance from a registered professional engineer
  • Complete geotechnical reviews under guidance from a registered professional engineer
  • Schedule dam inspections and communicate with dam owner, general public and consulting engineers
  • Complete construction permit site visits to observe construction of a new or modified dam
  • Schedule dam inspections and communicate with dam owner(s), general public and consulting engineers
  • Prepare reports, charts, and findings associated with projects in the program
  • Complete dam height evaluations
  • Be a team player and perform duties as assigned to create a highly efficient work environment


To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:

  • Geotechnical Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the investigation and evaluation of subsurface soil or geologic conditions and properties for the purpose of designing stable foundation systems, earthen structures, or the remediation of subsurface conditions.
  • Hydraulic Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods applicable to analysis of the flow of fluids (open channel and pressure flow), estimation of river stages, and design of hydraulic structures, drainage structures, pipes, navigation facilities, reservoirs, locks, and dams.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.


Equivalent to those typically gained by:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field related to geotechnical, mining or civil engineering from an ABET accredited college or university and ability to obtain Engineer-in-Training certification within 1 year of employment.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
