    Public Health Nurse I: $87,776 - $106,678
    Public Health Nurse II: $100,984 - $122,746

    Scheduled Salary Increases :
    Step 6 effective 7/8/24 (Public Health Nurse I: $87,776 - $112,008 Annually)
    Step 6 effective 7/8/24 (Public Health Nurse II: $100,984 - $128,882 Annually)
    3% effective 5/12/25 (Public Health Nurse I: $90,402 - $115,388 Annually)
    3% effective 5/12/25 (Public Health Nurse II: $104,026 - $132,782 Annually)

    The Fresno County Department of Public Health has rewarding employment opportunities for registered nurses who possess a California Public Health Nurse certificate and want to serve their community as a Public Health Nurse I/II.

    Public Health Nurses are primarily oriented to the provision of community nursing services. These services focus upon concepts of prevention, early intervention, communicable disease investigation, case management, and health education. Services may be delivered within the department, in homes, clinics, schools, and by liaison agreements with other agencies or organizations. These services include assessment of individual, family or community health status; referral to appropriate organizations for treatment; demonstration and teaching of health concepts to individuals and groups; and mobilizing of community resources to provide for continuity of client care between acute and extended care facilities and the home.

    Please note : The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill both extra-help and permanently allocated positions as vacancies occur. Individuals selected for extra-help appointment may be transitioned to a permanently allocated position at a later date as authorized by the Fresno County Personnel Rules.

    Positions in this classification are in Medical Group III - Heavy Physical Activity (Personnel Rule 8). This group includes positions which require heavy physical effort using arms, legs, back and trunk in frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling objects weighing (or offering resistance equivalent to) over 25 pounds. Generally, considerable bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, as well as standing and walking are involved. Physical stamina is usually required and explosive strength using bursts of energy may be required, depending upon specific position assignments.

    Minimum Qualifications Public Health Nurse I

    Certificate : Valid Public Health Nurse Certificate issued by the State of California, Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Registered Nursing.

    Licenses : Valid Registered Nurse License issued by the State of California, Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Registered Nursing.

    Valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.

    Public Health Nurse II

    Experience : Two (2) years of full-time paid work experience equivalent to that gained as a Public Health Nurse with the County of Fresno.

    Certificate : Valid Public Health Nurse Certificate issued by the State of California, Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Registered Nursing.

    Licenses : Valid Registered Nurse License issued by the State of California, Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Registered Nursing.

    Valid Class "C" driver's license, or equivalent.

    SELECTION PROCESS :

    D epending upon the number of applicants meeting the minimum qualifications and filing requirements, applicants may be scheduled for one of the processes listed below:

    • Oral Examination - An oral examination includes a panel consisting of at least two members within a similar field of expertise as the vacancy. Candidates are asked structured questions and must respond orally to allow the panel to evaluate the specific qualifications of each applicant.
      • If required, the oral examination will be administered in an online format via the Spark Hire platform.
    • Certify Without Examination - In instances where the number of eligible candidates is less than or equal to the number of qualified applicants the Department is entitled to receive under Personnel Rule 4212, the competitive examination process will be waived and the names will be certified without an examination.

    Successful candidates will be placed on an employment list, effective for a minimum of 3 months (may be extended up to 12 months), and certified in final rank order as vacancies occur.
