    Position Description
    Provides primary care as part of a health care team in an ambulatory setting in a particular discipline. Provides patient education and counseling as well as physical assessment. May participate in teaching programs for students and other student residents. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions and requires a high degree of contact with patients, families, and other clinic personnel and outside professionals. Some positions in the classification require travel to outreach clinics and home visits, and participation in educational efforts and special programs that occur outside of normal working hours. The APN will report clinically to the Lead APN, Medical Director of PICU, and PCCM Division Director. Administratively, the APN will report to the PCCM Division Director.

    Major/Essential Functions
    This position is open to Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (CPNP-ACs)

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    • Deliver Specialized, Collaborative Care in the PICU: Provide comprehensive care and management for critically ill pediatric patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Responsibilities include performing thorough admission histories and physicals (H&Ps), developing and implementing daily care plans, and managing the full inpatient course in close collaboration with the attending physician and interdisciplinary team.
    • Drive Continuity of Care and Clinical Coordination: Independently coordinate patient care, including initiating referrals and ensuring follow-up on specialty consults. Act as a key liaison between services to maintain seamless, high-quality care for each patient.
    • Engage in a Structured Clinical Schedule: Work scheduled clinical shifts totaling approximately 40-50 hours per week, including potential weekends or holidays as part of a collaborative provider team, ensuring round-the-clock care.
    • Advance PICU Practice through Scholarship and Quality Initiatives: Participate in or lead research projects, quality improvement (QI) initiatives, clinical case studies, and educational presentations. Contribute to evidence-based advancements in pediatric critical care and support the growth of team knowledge and clinical excellence.
    • Maintain Credentialing and Clinical Excellence: Secure and maintain credentialing through our Medical Staff Services Department to ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory standards for advanced practice providers.


    Required Qualifications
    Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program; current RN license in the State of Texas or have the ability to transfer your license to Texas. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the appropriate nursing specialty from an approved certification program as recognized by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners. Recognition by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners as an Advance Practitioner.
