MECHANIC IV who takes extreme pride in their technical and leadership skills, exhibits exemplary ethical behavior, and thrives in performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and complex repairs to City vehicles and equipment.
The purpose of the Mechanic IV (Mechanical) position is to be well versed when serving as a shop leader/trainer and oversees/guides diagnostic and repair work of lower-level mechanics. This position makes an immediate impact and adds value towards the achievement of the department's goals.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Mechanic IV (Mechanical) duties will include but are not limited to:
- Perform preventative maintenance activities to vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to oil and filter changes, servicing of lubricant and fluid levels, component wear inspection, and systems testing.
- Respond to complex reports of operational/condition issues with vehicles and equipment. Performs system testing and diagnostics to determine cause and course of repair action.
- Replace failed vehicle and equipment components of all complexity levels.
- Rebuild complex vehicle and equipment components as needed.
- Perform complex vehicle body and paint repairs as well as component upfit and make ready.
- Repairs include but are not limited to body panel shaping, substate preparation, painting, metal and fiberglass fabrication, welding, body filler application and component replacement.
- Service vehicles and equipment as needed at garages and at off-site locations.
- Advise mechanic staff on complex repair issues as needed and may conduct training as necessary.
- Guide diagnostic and repair activities of multiple lower-level mechanics simultaneously.
- Order parts and updates/completes work orders according to standard operating procedures.
- Use tools and equipment such as electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment, tire changers, bench grinders, pressure washers, hoists, jacks, and a variety of hand and power tools.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Perform housekeeping duties. Observe environmental and hazardous material procedures. Work safely and follows all safety procedures.
- Stays abreast of current/new technology relevant to the position.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MUST FURNISH OWN TOOLS AND SAFETY SHOES.
ADDITIONAL SALARY INCENTIVES ASE/EVT CERTIFICATION PAY (UP TO $5,200 ANNUALLY)
EVENING/NIGHT SHIFT INCENTIVE PAY (UP TO $3,000 ANNUALLY)
WORKING CONDITIONS There is routine exposure to significant levels of heat, cold moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts bruises and minor burns. The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
This is a FLEET Department Position at the Tier I Level. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
High school degree of GED equivalent.
Ability to read and understand service, repair, and parts manuals; mechanical diagrams; safety, and hazardous materials communications. Advanced math and computer skills required. Excellent problem-solving skills.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Seven-year experienceof automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience is required.

An Associate’s degree (at least 18-month program) in automotive, diesel, and/or heavy equipment (off road) technology plus, five-year equivalentof automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Valid Texas Class C upon hire. Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6-months of employment. Must comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Must achieve certification as Texas State Vehicle Inspector within 6 months of employment.
May be required to achieve Emergency Vehicle Technician certification. May require mobile air (EPA 609) certification. Aptitude test may be required.
PREFERENCES Preference will be given to applicants with mechanical aptitude (i.e., automotive, mechanical, and electrical activities).
Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). **Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.** GENERAL INFORMATION SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED The department may administer a skill assessment.
