    About the Utility Financial & Business Operations Division

    Utility Financial & Business Operations (UF&BO) division team members gain satisfaction when facilitating trainings for ESD’s workforce; feel empowered when managing a full range of information technology data and services to over 500 employees; deliver quality customer service in utility billing; enjoy their contributions to the success of peers by hiring and promoting the right people for the right positions; and oversee the budget planning and fiscal management for a wide variety of special funds that support the important work ESDers do.     Position Duties

    The Environmental Services Department is currently seeking one (1) part-time, unbenefited, undergraduate/graduate student intern in UF&BO’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) group.

    Duration of Assignment:
    Approximately 1 year with the possibility to extend.

    Salary ranges for this classification are:
    • Undergraduate Student Intern: $15.32 - $21.88 hourly
    • Graduate Student Intern: $19.82 - $29.27 hourly

    These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

    About the Internship

    The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) group is seeking one (1) undergraduate or graduate student intern to support the Regional Wastewater Facility and the Water Resources division’s Subsurface Utility Engineering program. The candidate would contribute to the collection of field data with centimeter accurate GNSS equipment, conduct record drawing research and data entry to ensure high quality data integrity. Additionally, the intern would conduct data analysis on internal datasets and other sources within the City as well as external sources to provide analogous results for community outreach and internal reporting.

    Skillsets for this internship include but are not limited to:

    Desired Skills
    • Knowledge and experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro software platform including Field Maps and Arc GIS Online, Microsoft Excel
    • Familiarity with Shapefiles, Geodatabase, and Enterprise environment.
    • Database management and analogous analysis skills.
    • Understanding of Subsurface Utility Engineering and Underground Service Alert.
    • Proficiency in data collection techniques.
    • GIS or data analysis programing languages.

    Other Skills

    • Self-starter, highly motivated, with good time management.
    • Ability to follow instructions, procedures and meet deadlines.
    • Effective written and verbal communication.
    • Flexibility with working conditions in both office and outdoor environments.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:
    • Undergraduate: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program. Must be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship.
    • Graduate: Completion of a bachelor’s degree and current enrollment in a master’s degree program from an accredited college or university. Must be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship.

    Experience: None. Preference for candidates with geospatial data, data analytics and field collection experience.

    Licenses & Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.

    Part-time positions(less than 40 hours per week) are required to participate in the City’s PTC 457 Deferred Compensation Plan per Federal regulations. Employees are required to contribute 3.75% of gross earning and the City contributes a matching amount of 3.75%. The funds contributed by the City are 100% vested upon initial deferral and will be held in in a stability of principal investment. This plan is in lieu of social security and does not include any healthcare benefits or contributions.

    Part-time employees may elect to contribute additional retirement savings through the City’s Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Additional Information on both plans can be found on the City’s website.
