    The Public Works Director directs the activities of the Public Works Department which oversees a diverse array of essential functions critical to maintaining and improving the City’s operations and infrastructure. Through strategic leadership, the Department ensures successful execution of initiatives that enhance the community’s beauty, well-being, resilience and sustainability.

    Under the administrative direction of the City Manager, the Public Works Director is responsible for the administration, direction, and supervision of all Public Works Department activities and employees, including the divisions of Engineering, Strategic Planning and Support, Sustainability, and Utilities.

    The Department consists of over 500 employees and has an annual operating budget of over $200 million. The Public Works Director performs duties with considerable independence and latitude in supervising and in being responsible for technical and administrative operations of the Department in accordance with municipal policies, rules, and regulations and supervises subordinates through oral and written reports and personal observation. Work is evaluated through conferences and review of progress reports. The City Manager may delegate supervisory authority to an Assistant City Manager.

    COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

    The City of Fort Lauderdale offers a competitive salary depending on qualifications and experience. The salary is negotiable, but the pay range is $126,835.70 - $228,693.00 annually. The City provides a generous benefits program including health, dental, life insurance and paid vacation and sick leave. In addition to the competitive benefits package and salary, the City participates in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) which offers an investment option and a pension option and requires a 3% contribution from employees. The City also contributes on behalf of the employee at a rate established by the State of Florida. New hires are automatically enrolled in FRS.

    * Per the City Charter residency may be required: Any person appointed by the city manager to the position of department director or department head shall, within six (6) months from the date of such appointment, establish residence and reside during such employment within the corporate limits; provided, however, such requirement is not applicable to any employee promoted and appointed to such position by the city manager. The city manager may extend the time period set forth above if it is determined that the appointee is experiencing financial difficulty in meeting the requirements of this section.

    Please Note: This is a non-classified, "at will" position and not subject to Civil Service Rules or any collective bargaining agreement. This job classification is in Management Category I for benefits purposes.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.     Directs the activities of the Public Works Department which oversees a diverse array of essential functions critical to maintaining and improving the City’s operations and infrastructure. Through strategic leadership, the Department ensures successful execution of initiatives that enhance the community’s beauty, well-being, resilience and sustainability. Highlights of the Department’s key responsibilities are provided below:

    • Providing engineering and project management services for the City’s Community Investment Plan (CIP) projects within the water, wastewater, and stormwater utilities and for other City Departments, including but not limited to Parks and Recreation, Transportation and Mobility, Development Services, Police, and Fire Rescue. This work includes managing project budgets and timelines and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.
    • Implementing, monitoring and updating the City’s Asset Management Program to allow for data-driven decision-making related to the City’s utilities infrastructure.
    • Coordination of the City’s internal and external sustainability initiatives and planning for a climate resilient community.
    • Management of citywide environmental and regulatory affairs.
    • Provide Solid Waste and Recycling services to residential customers.
    • Management of Fleet Services including the centralized procurement, upfitting, maintenance, and fueling of the City’s vehicles.
    • Operation, maintenance and enhancement of the City’s stormwater system to prevent and address flooding and water quality.
    • Operation and maintenance of the City’s water and wastewater systems, including two (2) water treatment plants that produce a combined average of 38.1 million gallons of water per day and one (1) regional wastewater treatment plant.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS, PREFERENCES & WORK ENVIRONMENT

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    Graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, business, public administration or related field. Master's degree in engineering, business, or public administration is preferred but not required. Eight (8) years progressively responsible experience in one or a combination of the following areas: public works engineering, public works maintenance and construction, or public works project management, including at least four (4) years in an executive or highly responsible administrative capacity.Possession of a valid registration as a Florida Professional Engineer is preferred but not required.
    Special Requirements:

    As a member of the Executive Strategy Team (EST), this position is expected to maintain presence at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) during declared emergencies.

    PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    The position is generally sedentary. Employee will sit most of the time but may walk or stand for brief periods of time.
