    The Tri-County Biological Science Center is seeking dedicated professionals to join our Forensic Biology Unit. Our laboratory will play a critical role in the criminal justice system by providing scientific analysis of physical evidence for investigations throughout the region.

    The Forensic Laboratory Analyst III is a senior-level professional position representing the highest level of analytical expertise within a discipline. This position applies advanced principles of forensic science to test and analyze the most complex and challenging physical evidence submitted to the laboratory. The analyst will interpret results, prepare reports, and testify in court as an expert witness in accordance with internal procedures, governmental requirements, and accreditation standards. This position requires exceptional analytical skills, strong leadership abilities, and the ability to provide direction to mid and entry-level analysts.

    HIRING RANGE: $85,509 - $96,283 (Commensurate with education and experience)

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Analysts assigned to this unit examine evidentiary material collected from crime scenes for the presence of biological substances and/or DNA. The analyst will perform

    serological testing to examine for the presence of potential biological material, processes samples to isolate DNA, interprets DNA results to make comparisons, and

    generates associated statistical analyses. Duties and responsibilities include:

    • Manages and prioritizes casework, often handling the most complex cases.
    • Conducts qualitative and quantitative analyses of physical evidence related to criminal investigations using scientific testing procedures, to include microscopic and macroscopic physical examinations and chemical analyses. Demonstrates mastery in multiple areas within their discipline, including advanced techniques.
    • Analyzes complex data, interprets results, and prepares comprehensive reports. May assist in developing, validating, and implementing new analytical methods.
    • Receives evidence and maintains proper chain of custody.
    • Prepares accurate and precise notes, technical reports, and comprehensive documentation of findings.
    • Serves as a qualified expert witness in court, effectively communicating complex scientific findings.
    • Provides technical assistance to submitting agencies and the criminal justice community.
    • Works with potentially hazardous materials following laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
    • Serves as a mentor, providing guidance and training to analysts at all levels. May assist in the development and implementation of training programs.
    • Provides leadership in quality control measures within their discipline.
    • Assists in developing, validating, and implementing new analytical methods.
    • Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Natural science, Forensic Science, or a closely related field required. Graduate degree preferred.
    • Minimum of twelve (12) semester or equivalent credit hours of combined undergraduate and graduate course work in biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, statistics and/or population genetics.
    • A minimum of eight (8) years of professional experience in an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) accredited forensic science laboratory.
    • Certification by the American Board of Criminalistics (ABC) preferred.
    • Successful completion of auditor (Forensic Technical Assessor, FBI QAS auditor, etc.) training preferred.
    • Must possess a valid SC Driver’s License (or obtain within three (3) months of hire) and meet the requirements of the County’s motor vehicle policy.
    • Able to distinguish the full range of the color spectrum to perform forensic examinations
    • Willingness to provide a DNA sample (mandatory condition of employment)
