  • Job Description

    Role

    Under minimal supervision, performs administrative and investigative work, conducted in a law enforcement environment, which includes supervision of other staff, coordination of events, investigation, research, statistical analysis, and/or administrative tasks.

    Major Duties, Responsibilities

    • Supervises staff, plans, prioritizes, and assigns tasks and projects. Trains staff, monitors work, evaluates performance, and reviews quality and timely completion of assigned duties and responsibilities.
    • Locates, processes, identifies, collects, and preserves physical evidence. Collects specimens of physical evidence for chemical and physical tests.
    • Monitors and ensures compliance with policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and safety issues and compliance and effectiveness.
    • Reproduces crime scenes by sketching and/or taking photographs and may photograph crime scenes and all pertinent evidence.
    • Schedules training for and from various outside agencies.
    • Trains and works with Criminal Investigation Sergeants, Detectives, and VIPs to ensure proper processing and collection of evidence at scenes.
    • Provides information to Detectives in a timely manner for the use in the interview of suspects or to assist in the identification of a suspect.
    • Coordinates with other law enforcement agencies and crime labs.
    • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:
    Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
    Experience:
    A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience as an Evidence Technician, Police Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Special Agent or closely related field to include a supervisory role working with physical evidence.
    An equivalent combination of directly related work experience and education may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-per-year basis.
    Additional Requirements:
    Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
    All persons applying for employment with the Sheriff’s Office shall be required to meet the following general qualifications: integrity, honesty, dependability, industry thoroughness, accuracy, good judgment, initiative, and courtesy.
    All persons will be required to complete a thorough background investigation to include, but not limited to polygraph, psychological, and physical fitness test.
    All persons must successfully complete a minimum six (6) month probation period.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Knowledge of:
    • Principles and practices of management and supervision.
    • Current principles and practices of Evidence and Property operations.
    • Policies and procedures established for YCSO.
    • Various data processing systems.
    • Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
    • Clerical office practices and procedures.
    • Research techniques and report writing.
    • Current Microsoft Office software.
    • Filing and recordkeeping.
    Skill in:
    • Conducting audits and inventories to ensure accuracy of the unit.
    • Use of pertinent evidence technology.
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.
    • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
    • Organization and adherence to detail.
    Ability to:
    • Stay current with new laws and trends which may affect the Evidence and Property Facility.
    • Prepare comprehensive written reports based upon results of investigations and reviews reports.
    • Follow written and verbal instructions.
    • Plan, assign, and review the work of others to ensure work is completed in a timely manner.
    • Supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff
    • Analyze and evaluate compiled data and reports.
    • Interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.
    • Conduct and document inquiries, investigations, audits, and reviews.
    • Analyze situations, activities, and problems through various research methodologies and develop recommendations for management attention.
    • Handle complaints and requests from both internal and external customers.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
    • Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
    • Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
    • Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
    • Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.
    Work Environment:
    The work environment is associated with an office and field environment year-round in all weather conditions, including crime scenes and autopsies. Includes exposure variety of hazardous conditions, such as decomposing bodies, strong odors, insects, hostility, emotionally charged situations, and child and animal victims.
    Physical Requirements:
    Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, walk over rough, uneven, and/or rocky surfaces and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
