    Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center is the largest and most prestigious facility of its type, not only in the Northwest, but in the nation.     ABOUT THE JOB:
    The Maintenance Specialist I will perform a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks in the operation, maintenance, repair, alteration, construction, janitorial, and landscaping of grounds and facilities. Incumbent will also perform grounds landscaping, snow removal, and disposal of trash, as well as janitorial duties. This position assesses building and facility maintenance needs and reports them to the supervisor for development of maintenance plans. This position may assist the Maintenance Specialist II with tasks related to maintaining buildings and grounds.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • S etting up, tearing down, assembling, disassembling, moving, and manipulating various items such as equipment, materials, event structures, animal stalls, fences, gates, irrigation, and platform/stage assemblies.
    • Frequently move large and heavy objects.
    • L oad and unload trucks.
    • Handle pick-ups and deliveries.
    • Maintain the stocking of materials and supplies.
    • Preventative building and equipment maintenance activities.
    • Semi-skilled carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, and limited electrical.
    • HVAC system maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, resetting panel breakers, changing filters, and replacing belts.
    What You Will Bring:
    Knowledge of or experience with:
    • Materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in building maintenance.
    • Safe work practices, occupational hazards, and safety precautions in public facilities.
    • Basic principles and practices of the construction industry and building trades.
    Skill in:
    • Using basic tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
    • Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
    • Checking details, estimates, and plans for maintenance and repair projects.
    • Following safe work practices and procedures.
    • Maintaining vehicles, tools, and specialized equipment.
    • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

    Compensation

    $4,174.77 to $5,594.64 per month for a 173.33 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.

    This position may also be eligible for a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) on June 22, 2025, pending budget adoption by the Board of County Commissioners.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED equivalent;
    • AND some work experience in building and grounds maintenance;
    • OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the job.


    Necessary Special Requirements

    The employment offer will be contingent upon pre-employment screening for criminal history and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). These screenings must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
    Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet the needs of the department.

    Physical Requirements. Must have the physical ability for continuous physical effort, to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, walk in rough, rocky, or uneven terrain, sit, stoop, bend, crawl, climb, twist, kneel, squat, crouch, reach, stand, walk, balance, lift, grasp, talk, hear, see, and rotate arms, wrists, and forearms. Must have the ability to push, pull, move, and/or lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds occasionally, 75 pounds frequently, and 10-25 pounds continuously.
