The City of Burlingame is accepting applications for the position of Casual Facilities Maintenance Worker. DEFINITIONUnder direction performs skilled work in several trades in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment on City owned buildings.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this class are assigned a variety of tasks in the building trades. Although the work requires the use of journey worker’s tools and the ability to perform operations in several of the crafts, the skills required in any one field is normally less that would be required of a journey worker in that field.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Responsibilities including but not limited to)
- Painting (patch holes, drywall taping and finishing, caulking, interior painting and exterior painting)
- Electrical (replace light bulbs, ballast, switches and outlets)
- Plumbing (repair/replace mixing valves and stems, plunge toilets and use power augers)
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Building trade methods, materials and equipment; safe work practices and estimate job material, duration and cost.
Ability to: Work efficiently with others, log/record work completed, climb ladders, Use the required tools and equipment skillfully and safely; and work independently.
Skills: Operate a variety of power tools such as paint sprayer, sanders and pressure washers, mixers, drills and grinders.
License: Possession of a Class C driver’s license issued by the DMV.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is obtained from two years’ experience in general building maintenance work including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting. Typically, sufficient education is required to read and follow detailed instructions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSAbility to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all those contacted in the course of work; to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; twist upper body and to sit and stand for moderate periods of time. Ability to walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, and squat for long periods of time and to lift materials weighing up to 50 lbs.

BenefitsHealthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act: California Paid Sick Leave Benefit, as amended effective 1/1/2024. This benefit accrues at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours and is available after 90 days of employment. There is no cash value associated with benefit.
Vacation Pay. This benefit is for part-time casual employees who work 30 or more days within a year from the beginning of employment with the City of Burlingame, and accrues at the rate of one hour for every 52 hours worked to a maximum benefit of 16 hours per year. No employee shall be allowed to have an accumulation of more than two years’ worth of vacation accrual to their credit at any one time.
No other benefits are offered. This position is at will and is not part of the City's Civil Service System. There is no guarantee of hours and employment may end at any time.
