    Job Summary

    The Pest Control and Spray Specialist performs pest control operations for the eradication, suppression and control of variety of pests using the appropriate methods.

    Responsibilities

    Apply appropriate methods consisting of chemical, biological, physical methods for the eradication and control of fungi, pests, insects, and weeds to plants, trees, shrubs, lawns, embankments, roads, parking lots, unimproved acreage, and buildings; select and mix sprays and poisons according to specific formulate to accomplish desired results selecting the appropriate times to apply the materials taking into consideration weather conditions and frequency of usage. Mix chemicals appropriately; use the proper personal protective equipment (PPE).

    Estimate job costs and quantities of materials needed, order and store chemicals and supplies used in spraying programs in a safe and effective manner.

    Operate and perform minor maintenance on back-tank spray units, power boom spray tractors, and other spraying equipment.

    Provide lead directions to Groundsworkers, or individuals in other grounds classifications engaged in routine spray and pest eradication activities.

    Maintain an appropriate inventory of pesticides, records, and safety data sheets in compliance with the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR).

    Other Classification-Related Duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

    Two years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscape areas or grounds, with one year of experience in pest and/or spray control work, or two years of experience in assisting a Pest Control and Spray Specialist in the pest and spray control work.

    Possession of the appropriate California Department of Pesticide Regulation license to perform pest control work.

    Required Knowledge, skills, and Abilities

    Thorough knowledge of the characteristics of the particular plant disease or weed condition to be treated; living habits of the particular noxious animal or insect to be exterminated; characteristics and resultant effects of poisons and sprays applied; available materials and control techniques; and county, State and Federal regulations governing the use of chemicals. General knowledge of the relationships of the environment to pests and their control and the environmental impact of certain chemicals and safety precautions when using these chemicals.

    Ability to recognize and properly treat horticultural and pest problems; operate and make minor repairs to spray equipment; maintain accurate records and submit reports to appropriate agencies of the State and county concerning types and quantities of chemicals used and when they were applied; and read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Knowledge of integrated pest management principles, practices, and methods
    Ability to identify and treat landscape pest problems
    Operate a variety of pest control equipment including spray equipment
    Maintain accurate records and submit reports to the appropriate regulatory agency
    May lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

    License / Certification

    Possession of a California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate or License Category B landscape maintenance.

    Valid CA Driver's License

    Special Conditions

    Possession of the appropriate California Department of Pesticide Regulation license to perform pest control work. Some positions may require possession of a valid California driver’s license.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    Anticipated Hiring Range: minimum $3,907 - maximum $4,157 monthly.

    Classification Salary Range: minimum $3,907 - maximum $6,375 monthly.

    The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

    The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year.     Position Information:

    Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary

    Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Conditions of Employment

    Background Check

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    Drivers License Check

    Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

    Mandated Reporter

    The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
