TYPICAL DUTIES - Provides specialized technical assistance to system users for desktop computer systems equipment including hardware, software and peripheral equipment.
- Sets up desktop systems; installs, tests and configures computer hardware, software, programs and applications; troubleshoots equipment to ensure functional operation.
- Serves as first level response to routine user enquiries and requests for assistance on desktop and computer related problems; determines severity of problem and resolves or refers to higher-level information systems staff; provides information on system and application functions; communicates user access rights.
- Performs minor repair on computer systems and peripheral equipment including printers, modems, scanners and related devices; coordinates major equipment repairs; locates vendors and ships parts as needed; arranges for vendor to perform on-site repairs.
- Participates in planning, evaluating, selecting, implementing and installing new computer hardware and software; installs cabling and wiring for systems and peripheral equipment.
- Maintains equipment inventories/libraries and updates as required; maintains accurate records and logs of all services performed.
- Learns to develop and write technical documentation on systems and procedures and training materials for end users.
- Learns to perform technical network administration and maintenance duties.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Note: Incumbents who, at the time that Classification Study #01-22 is adopted by the Board of Supervisors, occupy full-time Civil Service positions reclassified to this class by the study, shall be deemed to meet the requirements listed below.
EITHER PATTERN I Experience: One year as a Department Information Systems Technician II in San Joaquin County.
OR PATTERN II Education: Completion of at least 60 semester (or 90 quarter) units from an accredited college or university, including 24 units in computer science.
Experience: One year of experience that included substantial responsibility for operating, installing, configuring, testing, troubleshooting and repairing desktop computer hardware, software, peripheral equipment and/or network systems.
Substitution #1: Possession of an approved information systems technology certificate, or completion of an approved information systems training course may substitute for all or part of the above-required education. A list of approved certificates and/or courses shall be maintained within the Human Resources Department.
Substitution #2: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the above-required education on a year-for-year basis.
AND Special Requirement: Applicants for positions in this class may be required to demonstrate proficiency in operating, installing, configuring, testing, troubleshooting and/or repairing desktop computer hardware, software, peripheral equipment and/or network systems as part of the testing or selection process.

Employment of Relatives: Applicants who are relatives of employees in a department within the 3rd degree of relationship, (parent, child, grandparent, grandchild or sibling) either by blood or marriage, may not be appointed, promoted, transferred into or within the department when:
- They are related to the Appointing Authority, or
- The employment would result in one of them supervising the work of the other
