    THE POSITION:
    The Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal is a non-safety management position responsible for the day-to-day professional and technical non-sworn work in the analysis and enforcement of all local, state and federal laws and ordinances as they pertain to fire safety, prevention and investigation. Assignments involve programming, planning, and supervising a comprehensive inspection program for the removal and rectification of fire hazards. Work includes personal participation as the lead in the inspectional and investigating phases of the program. The incumbent exercises formal supervision over the staff of the Community Risk Reduction Division. Work is performed with considerable independence under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief and is reviewed through conferences and reports. Performs related duties as required.
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Five (5) years of extensive and progressively responsible experience in fire prevention, fire inspection, fire investigation, community risk reduction, fire code enforcement, hazardous materials management, fire education and fire inspection responsibilities, OR any experience performing the aforementioned responsibilities with at least fifteen (15) years of fire operations experience with Costa Mesa Fire and Rescue.
    • Two (2) years of administrative and supervisory responsibility is required.
    • Completion of the “Terrorism Liaison Officer (TLO) - Basic” course presented by The Joint Regional Assessment Center is highly desirable.
    • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform essential functions may also be considered, including sworn fire experience.

    LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION:
    • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License. Revocation of license during employment may result in disciplinary action or reassignment.
    • Successful completion of PC832 training by the end of the probationary period.
    • Possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Registered Fire Protection Engineer in the State of California or certification by the State of California Office of the Fire Marshal as Fire Prevention Officer or Fire Marshal is highly desirable.
    • State of California Office of the State Fire Marshal certification tracks in Fire Prevention, Hazardous Materials, Fire Inspector, Plan Examiner, Fire Marshal (2017), Community Risk Reduction or related fields are desirable.


    The salary for the Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal is up to $203,412 annually, DOQ. A 3.5% increase will be effective July 2026.
