Wake County GSA is seeking a strategic and experienced
Physical Plant Director to oversee the operations, maintenance and energy management of a diverse and dynamic building portfolio.
Our Wake County Physical Plant Director leads a team of full time employees organized into 4 teams across 3 shifts (with 2 on-call positions covering the weekend and holidays). These team consist of General Trades, Electrical, HVAC and Plumbing. Additionally, the administration group has a 3-person energy team and a 2-person project management team. This division is responsible for the maintenance, major repairs and minor renovations in over five million square feet of space in more than 180 buildings. Wake County’s building portfolio ranges from libraries, a children’s museum and baseball stadium to jails and courthouses. The Physical Plant Director is also responsible for the energy management of Wake County facilities and is staff to the Wake County Energy Advisory Commission along with the Senior Energy Engineer. This position also works closely with Facilities Design & Construction to ensure that buildings are built in a sustainable and maintainable manner.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manages the repair, alteration and replacement of equipment and infrastructure supporting Wake County facility operations
- Oversees the bidding and monitoring of more than 100 contracts required for the maintenance and continued operation of Wake County facilities in accordance with State and Federal laws, as well as Wake County Procurement Guidelines
- Oversees capital improvement projects (CIP) relating to facility upgrades and modifications
- Organizes and supervises a team of 71 tradespeople and engineers to maintain the safe and efficient operation of County facilities
- Supervises assigned staff by providing inclusive leadership, coaching, providing direction and approving time sheets, as well as monitoring the performance of the team
- Manages division operating budget as well as all budget commitments related to facility maintenance and repair
- Responsible to maintain life safety systems in accordance with all relevant authorities having jurisdiction

The Basics (Required Education and Experience) - Bachelor's degree
- Six years of experience in physical plant administration including at least two years of supervisory experience
- Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience) - North Carolina Professional Engineering License (or ability to obtain if licensed in another state)
