    Job Description

    SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the Street Technician II performs and assists in coordinating street maintenance and repair operations. This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment, ensuring safety compliance, and helping monitor and improve street system processes.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Operate a full range of construction and heavy equipment including backhoes, front-end loaders, and hydraulic excavators.
    • Perform skilled street construction and maintenance tasks.
    • Monitor street conditions and propose improvements.
    • Lead small work crews and provide direction as needed.
    • Record and analyze street data using digital tools.
    • Conduct safety inspections and ensure compliance with regulations.
    • Maintain comprehensive records and assist in training lower-level staff.
    • Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
    • Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.


    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

    Knowledge:
    • Thorough understanding of street maintenance practices, tools, and materials.
    • Intermediate data analysis and problem-solving abilities.
    • Thorough understanding of construction practices and city maintenance procedures.
    • Thorough understanding of safety procedures and practices.
    • Willingness to learn the use of equipment and tools.
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
    • Intermediate understanding of personal computer and various software applications.


    Skill in:
    • Leadership skills and ability to coordinate tasks and personnel.
    • Strong recordkeeping, safety awareness, and communication skills.
    • Ability to operate heavy equipment.
    • Ability to read and understand maps, instructions and safety protocols.
    • Handling situations which require diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
    • Understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
    • Compiling data; maintaining records and files; and preparing clear and concise reports.
    • Providing efficient customer service.
    • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential.
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in street maintenance, construction, or a related field.


    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
    • Class B Texas Commercial Driver’s License.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    Work is performed primarily in an outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to climb ladders. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.

    Compensation Range

    $45,657-$68,486
