Job Summary Under the supervision of the Department Chair, this position provides technical support for faculty, and students in the teaching and research laboratories. Support includes setting up laboratory materials and equipment for student and faculty use; providing training in the use of laboratory equipment and software application associated with this equipment; providing minor repair for equipment used in the laboratory; monitoring and making suggestions/modifications to ensure the safety and security of department laboratories, and partnering with faculty, develop, refine, and implement activities that incorporate the latest scientific knowledge into the classroom. The incumbent is required to independently analyze situations, formulate action plans, execute decisions, and meet the goals of the program.
Department Summary The Biological Sciences Department is the largest academic unit within the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics and is one of the largest departments at Cal Poly. There are approximately 900 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students. The department's mission is three-fold: I) offer majors leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences, Marine Science, or Microbiology; 2) offer courses to satisfy the biology requirements for other majors; and 3) offer courses to meet general education and breadth requirements for Cal Poly's entire student population. The department offers approximately 125 different courses to over 10,000 students annually, with the majority of courses having a laboratory component. Key Qualifications - Extensive knowledge of biological principles and applications with extensive laboratory course work in biology and chemistry. Experience providing laboratory support in biology, biochemistry or a related field.
- Ability to interpret, communicate and apply laboratory policies and procedures. Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and waste disposal protocols.
- Ability to maintain inventory of essential consumables and equipment in an organized fashion.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines. Ability to resolve problems and requests associated with overlapping deadlines, schedules and emergencies.
- Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
Education and Experience - Three years of experience providing instructional support services in a related discipline. Two years of college with 16 semester units in courses in the related specialty area discipline may be substituted for one year of required experience OR four years of college with 16 semester units in courses in the related specialist area discipline may be substituted for two years of required experience.
Salary and Benefits Anticipated Hiring Range: $62,000 - $82,000 annually
Classification Range: $55,296 - $95,976 annually

The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
