    Working Title: Director of Environmental Health and Safety

    Department Name: Environmental Health and Safety

    Division: Administration and Finance

    Classification Title:

    Position Salary Range: $11,000 - $16,600 per month

    The anticipated hiring range for this position is $11,400 - $12,400 per month.

    Salary is commensurate with experience.

    About the Department/Position:

    Under the general direction of the AVP, Facilities Management and Operations, the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive EHS programs to ensure a safe and healthy campus environment. This role ensures compliance with relevant regulations and statutes.

    MPP employees serve at the pleasure of the campus President. MPPs do not serve a probationary period and never receive permanent status.

    Overview of Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Oversee health and safety staff, providing guidance and support
    • Develop and maintain effective health and safety programs responsive to OSHA and university requirements.
    • Create and update health and safety policies and procedures based on new regulations.
    • Identify potential hazards and perform inspections.
    • Evaluate risks and conduct investigations.
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations in areas such as environmental health and safety, occupational safety, and fire and life safety.
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive safety training program; conduct trainings or supervise outsourced trainers.
    • Track training participation and ensure compliance.
    • Promote campus safety through recognition programs and information sharing.
    • Chair the University Health and Safety Committee and ensure productive meetings.
    • Distribute bulletins and advisories on safety and risk mitigation.
    • Manage the University's hazardous materials program.
    • Supervise consultants and contractors for hazardous materials inspections and removal.
    • Ensure compliance with hazardous materials regulations.
    • Oversee chemical hygiene and laboratory safety.
    • Respond to health and safety emergencies and provide risk analysis.
    • Serve as the Planning Section Chief for the University Incident Command System during emergencies.
    • Participate in emergency planning training sessions.
    • Develop an annual Health and Safety report detailing significant events, trends, and program status.
    • Maintain comprehensive record-keeping for hazardous materials and compliance.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • A bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health, environmental or facilities engineering, industrial hygiene, or a related field from an accredited four year college or university or an equivalent combination of education/experience. Five years of related professional experience and two years managerial experience in occupational or environmental health and safety is required.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Knowledge:

      • Regulatory Compliance: In-depth understanding of OSHA regulations, as well as local, state, and federal health and safety laws.
      • Health and Safety Standards: Familiarity with industry standards and best practices in health and safety, including injury and illness prevention, hazardous materials management, and emergency preparedness.
      • Risk Assessment: Knowledge of risk assessment methodologies and hazard identification techniques.
      • Environmental Protection: Understanding of environmental protection regulations and hazardous materials management.
      • Training and Development: Knowledge of adult learning principles and training program development.



    • Skills:

      • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze data, conduct investigations, and evaluate findings to make informed recommendations.
      • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey safety information and training.
      • Leadership Skills: Ability to lead committees, manage teams, and supervise contractors and consultants.
      • Organizational Skills: Proficiency in developing and maintaining comprehensive record-keeping systems and tracking compliance.
      • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify potential hazards, evaluate risks, and implement corrective actions.



    • Abilities:

      • Attention to Detail: Ability to meticulously follow regulations and ensure compliance with all safety standards.
      • Decision-Making: Ability to make sound decisions quickly, especially in emergency situations.
      • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work collaboratively with various departments and stakeholders to promote a culture of safety.
      • Adaptability: Ability to stay updated with new regulations and adapt policies and procedures accordingly.
      • Proactive Approach: Ability to anticipate potential safety issues and address them before they become problems.
