JOB SUMMARY JOB SUMMARY Provides high-risk nutrition counseling; approves non-contract and prescription formulas; plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates the nutrition services in all WIC clinics; provides training and technical assistance to all staff; serves as the Training Coordinator, Nutrition/Breastfeeding Coordinator and develops and implements the respective annual plans.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DECISION MAKING ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides nutrition services and expertise:
- Assesses and counsels high-risk clients.
- Develops and implements nutrition education and breastfeeding plans.
- Approves formulas for participants with special needs.
- Consults with and coordinates care with physicians and/or other healthcare providers.
- Develops nutrition education materials and programs and completes special projects.
- Provides breastfeeding education, support, problem resolution, and training on breastfeeding equipment/aids.
Oversees/monitors clinic operations and the Department’s quality assurance function:
- Ensures clinic/program compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
- Reviews clinic operations and documentation; implements appropriate changes and corrections; prepares and disseminates reports.
- Conducts meetings and training sessions.
- Coordinates/monitors surveys and special project/event implementation.
Performs participant certification services and thorough documentation.
- Obtains blood samples and anthropometrics.
- Reviews health history and determines nutritional risk codes; assigns proper food package for issuance to participants.
- Reviews and determines eligibility of participants.
- Counsels individuals and families on nutrition; addresses nutritional concerns and goals of parent/guardian.
- Provides referrals to other health and social service providers
Maintains WIC facility to ensure a clean, safe, and sanitary environment:
- Participates in cleaning restrooms, kitchen/break area, furniture, doors, windows, floors and equipment.
- Removes trash to the proper disposal receptacle.
- Re-stocks supplies such as tissue, towels, soap and hand sanitizer.
- Reports facility issues to supervisor.
Miscellaneous:
- Represents local agency at the community and State level; provides outreach and program presentations to the public; teaches nutrition education classes; responds to information requests from staff, State, and the public; serves as the Nutrition and Breastfeeding Coordinator and develops annual plans; coordinates volunteers, students, and interns; performs other duties as assigned.
DECISION MAKING - Assess clients, determine education needs of clients and staff, evaluate program services, revise and implement policies, procedures, and special events.
- Oversees the Department’s quality assurance function and clinic operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Salary is dependent upon qualifications) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS - Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related field is required.
- Certification as a Registered Dietitian (RD) is required.
- Three (3) years nutrition and/or public health experience.
- Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
- Proof of required immunizations or obtain upon employment.
CORE COMPETENCIES AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS JOB DIMENSIONS - Must be able to read and comprehend regulations and program policy manuals; must be able to review/prepare program documentation.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are required; must be able to maintain positive working relationships with City departments and personnel, outside agencies, community organizations, healthcare providers, vendors, program participants, and the general public.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Physical requirements include lifting up to 45 pounds rarely. Subject to talking frequently; sitting, vision and hearing constantly; standing, walking, reaching, handling, fine dexterity and foot controls occasionally; lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crouching, climbing and balancing rarely.
Working conditions involve exposure to infectious diseases with occasional exposure to blood borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, and potentially irate members of the public.
