FITNESS INSTRUCTORDepartment: Parks and RecreationPay Grade: Temporary Pay TableFLSA Status: Non-Exempt Personnel Status: Temporary Part-Time JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and teaching fitness classes for the Parks and Recreation Department. This position reports to the supervisor of the facility they are assigned to.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - Develops, promotes, teaches, and evaluates fitness-related classes.
- Keeps up-to-date rosters for classes.
- Keeps immediate supervisor informed of work progress and any potential problems.
- Monitors and maintains fitness area at assigned facility as needed.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Up to and including some high school. Minimum of six (6) months experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that would enable the employee to perform the job duties.
Special Qualifications: - Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
- Possession of or the ability to readily obtain CPR/First Aid/AED certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Possession of or the ability to readily obtain certification(s) for the specific fitness class(es) assigned to instruct (i.e., Zumba, Yoga, Body Pump, etc.)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Knowledge of department and recreation center rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of safety principles and procedures involved in teaching fitness classes.
- Knowledge of CPR, First Aid, and AED procedures.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
- Skill in teaching others safe fitness techniques, styles, and exercise practices.
- Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is medium work, which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring manual dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed in an indoor recreation center environment and occasionally outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasionally in cold, hot, or inclement weather. The employee may need to use small office equipment such as computers, multi-function copy machines, and telephone systems. The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
