Veterinarian Diagnostician
The State of Nevada, Department of Agriculture (NDA), is accepting applications for the position of
Veterinarian Diagnostician. This is an unclassified, full-time position and will be located in Sparks,
Nevada. The State of Nevada is committed to recruiting and retaining a talented workforce to provide

Annual Salary: $108,824 (Employer Paid Retirement) to $127,052 (Employee/Employer Paid
Retirement)
Benefits and Pay: The State benefits package includes a retirement system, paid health, vision, dental, life
and disability insurance, 12 paid holidays, and paid sick and annual leave. Other employee paid benefits
such as deferred compensation plans are available.

Agency RESPONSIBILITIES:
The NDA's mission is to preserve, protect and promote Nevada agriculture. Through its five divisions
Administrative Services, Animal Industry, Measurement Standards, Food and Nutrition, and Plant Health
and Compliance and 225 dedicated employees, the NDA supports agriculture and food manufacturing
industries while also ensuring a safe food supply, protecting, and promoting the livestock industry of the
state of Nevada, worker safety through regulatory and administrative practices, and public and
environmental health. The NDA also provides oversight for the United States Department of
Agriculture's school and community nutrition food distribution programs, ensuring food security for all
Nevadans.
Position Description:
The Veterinary Medical Services program is responsible for statewide disease traceability, surveillance,
epidemiology, outreach, and enforcement related to livestock and domestic animal laws. The position
provides leadership, direction, and oversight of programs for the control and eradication of certain
infectious, contagious and/or parasitic diseases of livestock. The Veterinarian Diagnostician works

education and advisement. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Provides animal health consultation and outreach to department personnel, veterinarians, the
public, varied interest groups and other state and federal agencies regarding animal disease and
health matters, program requirements, laws and regulations
• Establishes, implements and monitors current state and federal cooperative agreements and grants
including, but not limited to, the USDA's Cooperative Agreements
• Proficiency in Animal Disease Traceability (ADT) rules and regulations including data entry in
both state and federal databases for disease reporting, official animal identification and premise
identification
• Maintains a working knowledge of current professionally accepted techniques in the diagnosis of
infectious, contagious and parasitic diseases of livestock and poultry by attending local, state and
national seminars and short courses and periodically soliciting updated information from various
veterinary medical colleges as well as from the USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratory
sources, in order to comply with NRS 571, CFR, UM&R, and to provide diagnostic services
commensurate with economical, effective and up to date techniques
• Maintain current working knowledge of diseases and regulatory program components including
Scrapie, rabies, tuberculosis, brucellosis and other disease programs, both state and federal
• Responsible for obtaining and submitting samples for Nevada's requirements for Scrapie
Surveillance
• Supports the division and the State Veterinarian with Foreign Animal Disease (FAD)
investigations when needed
• Implements appropriate diagnostic procedures on laboratory submissions to identify zoonotic and
non-zoonotic diseases serving as case manager for necropsy and other laboratory testing
• Provides pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical laboratory support for testing including, but
not limited to, necropsy, rabies, cytology and serology testing
• Participate in the review, development, and implementation of the laboratory's quality assurance
system including departmental procedures
• Assumes the role of the Quality Assurance Manager for the Animal Disease Laboratory and
manages the document control workflow for standard operating procedures
• Periodic out-of-state travel for conferences and training and in-state travel for inspection check-
ins at state and county fairs and sample collection as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must be a graduate of a veterinary school or college approved by the American Veterinary
Medical Association and have 3 years of experience in official work for regulating and controlling
diseases in livestock (NRS 561.205).
Regulatory experience, as a licensed veterinarian, includes but is not limited to, regulating, and/or
controlling disease in livestock; background in large animal medicine, epidemiology, and livestock
production; background in and comfort with livestock field necropsy or post-mortem examinations,
participation in federal/state regulatory programs such as issuing health certificates, equine infectious
anemia sampling, rabies vaccination programs, and Trichomoniasis testing. Additional qualifications may
include, knowledge of zoonotic diseases and the ability to address public health concerns, knowledge and
understanding of programs, statutes, and regulations relevant to animal disease prevention, testing, and
diagnosis, having the ability to plan, organize and direct work of multi-disciplinary staff and integrate
activities of diverse programs, experience in implementing public awareness and education programs to

LICENSE:
Possession of a valid license to practice veterinary medicine as issued by a United States licensing
agency. Requires a valid Nevada Driver's License.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
