Environmental Consultant!
The Environmental Consultant - Plan Review is responsible for providing project management for special and complex projects, ensuring compliance with state rules and local regulations. This role serves as a subject matter expert on specialized topics for other Departmental staff and protects public health and environmental quality by reviewing construction plans, performing inspections, and issuing permits according to state rules and local regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage special and complex projects, ensuring compliance with state and local regulations
- Serve as a subject matter expert and coordinate with local municipalities for project requirements
- Review facility plans and evaluate construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes at public facilities, including food service, lodging, institutions, schools, child and adult care centers, nursing homes, swimming pools, and others
- Recommend adjustments to projects to assist customers with compliance while minimizing time and financial burden
- Issue permits for facilities that comply with NC DHHS regulations
- Educate and consult with customers to facilitate the permitting process and reduce risk factors
- Communicate compliance messages clearly to a diverse group of operators
- Provide guidance, coaching, and training to other employees in the work group
- Perform inspections and evaluations to enforce environmental regulations at North Carolina DHHS regulated public facilities and communicate findings with operators

The Basics (Required Education and Experience) - Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science or related field
- Three years of experience in environmental planning, inspections or engineering
- NC Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS)
- Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience) - 3 Years NC Registered Environmental Health Specialist
- Current NC DHHS authorizations in Food, Lodging and Institutions, Child Care and School Sanitation, and Public Swimming Pools
- Current or prior experience conducting plan reviews or construction inspections
- Knowledge of EnerGov software

- Excellent verbal and written communications skills
- Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills being able to succinctly communicate, market and sell practical Environmental Health and Safety solutions to all levels of company/business/and facility personnel
- Critical thinking skills to analyze complex situations and propose recommendations supported by defensible documentation
- Ability to analyze situations, navigate ambiguity, and offer informed recommendations and guidance to resolve problems
- Ability to independently prioritize, manage and coordinate multiple assignments
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
