DescriptionUnder immediate (I) and general (II) supervision, the incumbent performs the manual and clerical work required for the operation of the Central Services & Supply unit, including purchasing, receiving, transporting, stocking, issuing, shipping, inventorying, assembling, packaging, sterilizing and record keeping.
Distinguishing Characteristics:Positions allocated to this series differ from those in the Office Assistant series in that the former focus on the processing of goods and materials while the latter focus on the processing of people and data.
Inventory Management Assistant I is the entry-level classification in this series. The incumbent performs limited inventory management support tasks associated with a few functional areas (e.g., stock/issuance, central receiving, sterilization/ packaging).
Inventory Management Assistant II is a journey-level classification in this series. The incumbent performs complex and varied inventory management duties in support of multiple functional areas of a large central supply/warehouse unit or all operations of a small storeroom with limited range of stock items.
APPROXIMATE SALARIES:Inventory Management Assistant I: $21.00 - $23.54 per hour
Inventory Management Assistant II: $21.00 - $25.88 per hour
EDUCATION/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.
VETERAN’S POINTS: This is a trainee/entry level classification (Level I), and Veteran’s Points may apply to eligible candidates. Documentation of military service (DD-214) must be submitted prior to close of recruitment in order to receive points.

Examples Of DutiesDepth and breadth of assignments increase at each level, but may include the following:
- Receives items to be used by County agencies or programs by reviewing shipping documents to ensure the quantity and quality of items received meet the specification of items ordered.
- Labels and stores items such as office supplies, excess property, communication parts, maintenance materials, medical supplies and/or equipment by following methods appropriate for each type of item in order to prevent damage/spoilage and to provide easy accessibility to item.
- Issues items by distributing over-the-counter, loading on transportation vehicles, or packaging and delivering or shipping in order to fill the orders received.
- Disposes of expendable items by inspecting supplies, materials and equipment to determine the condition for use, transfer or sale and contacting the appropriate authority for its disposition in order to efficiently distribute County property and use storeroom space.
- Cleans and sterilizes medical instruments and equipment; maintains a clean working area/warehouse.
- Inputs and retrieves data used for inventory control by using basic keyboard and computer knowledge in the operation of a computerized inventory control system.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Typical QualificationsEDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCESome (I, II) experience in inventory control, storekeeping, warehousing or hospital central supply which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge and abilities. The required knowledge and abilities also can be obtained by:
Inventory Management Assistant I
Any combination of education, training or experience equivalent to one year of clerical experience; OR six months experience as a Clerical Trainee for the County of Ventura.
Inventory Management Assistant II
Any combination of education, training or experience equivalent to one year of clerical experience plus one year of experience in inventory control, storekeeping, warehousing or hospital central supply; OR six months of experience as an Inventory Management Assistant I for the County of Ventura.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Must be able to lift/carry/move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Must be willing to work in a sterile environment and potentially be exposed to hazardous materials
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time on concrete floors
- Must be willing to work fluctuating schedules that include days, evenings, nights, and weekends.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Some (Inventory Management Assistant I) to thorough (Inventory Management Assistant II) knowledge of grades, uses and characteristics of inventory management principles and practices; supplies, equipment and parts required in support of the organization's operation; basic storeroom methods and procedures; basic computer keyboard and functions; postal regulations as they relate to shipping; packaging methods and procedures.
Some (Inventory Management Assistant I) to working (Inventory Management Assistant II) ability to: read and use manufacturer's catalogs and parts lists; systematically arrange similar kinds of stock and/or property into groups or categories according to established criteria; perform repetitive work according to set procedures, sequence and pace; maintain accurate inventory and storekeeping records; lift, move, sort and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds; operate materials handling and safety equipment; write clear and concise reports; plan, schedule and coordinate the work of others; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers, vendors and users.
Working Conditions:
Depending on assignments, incumbents may work in a warehouse or in an environment with some disagreeable elements such as noise, dust, fumes, machinery or contagious diseases requiring exercise of safety precautions.

WRITTEN EXAM - 100%: An unproctored, online, and internet-based written exam will be administered the test applicants’ knowledge of inventory control, arithmetic, comparison/interpretation, and following written instructions
. Applicants must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
Applicants successfully completing the exam process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
