Department of Public Health is recruiting for a
Public Health Microbiologist III to oversee and perform microbiological, immunological and molecular biology testing on clinical specimens, and animal, food, water, and other samples. The incumbent selected for this opportunity will be assigned to conduct the most difficult and complex testing and analysis; develop, validate and implement new testing protocols; work on special projects or studies; be responsible for maintaining/updating quality assurance records; participate in the training and assessment of laboratory staff; and serve as a section lead over microbiologist and support laboratory personnel as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Work Location: The San Bernardino County Public Health Laboratory is located in Ontario, CA. Candidates must indicate their availability in the supplemental questionnaire .
Work Schedule: The position is Monday through Friday 8AM to 5PM with the possibility of call-back for urgent lab testing. Positions in DPH are designated Disaster Service Workers and may be scheduled to work after-hours, weekends and holidays to cover emergency response.
Working Conditions: Incumbents are routinely exposed to dangerous chemicals and infectious materials.
Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a background investigation which includes verification of employment history and education, fingerprinting, physical exam, and drug screening.

Public Health Microbiologist Licensure: Incumbents selected for these positions must provide verification of possessing a Public Health Microbiologist Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) prior to start date or offer maybe rescinded.
Minimum RequirementsLicense: Must possess a valid Public Health Microbiologist Certificate issued by the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH.)
Applicants must attach a legible copy of the California Microbiologist Certificate with the application, or the application will be disqualified. -AND-Education/Experience: Applicants
must meet
one of the following options:
- Option 1: A Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or other related field of study, -and- two (2) years (full-time equivalent) of laboratory training or experience performing high complexity testing in a state or local government Public Health laboratory or clinical laboratory.
-OR- - Option 2: A Master's degree or higher in Biological Science or other related field of study, -and- one (1) year (full-time equivalent) of laboratory training or experience performing high complexity testing in a state or local government Public Health laboratory or clinical laboratory.
Desired QualificationsThe following are highly desirable:
- Familiarity with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA).
- Computer experience using Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Laboratory Information Management Systems.
