    Since 1972, the Missouri Division of Fire Safety / Office of the State Fire Marshal has been the State of Missouri’s premier regulatory oversight and enforcement agency for Fire Investigations, Fire Inspections, Elevator and Amusement Ride Safety, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety, and Firefighter Training and Certification. The Division provides services to over 25,000 firefighters in Missouri, as well as to the 6.1 million residents and over 40 million visitors to the state, each year.

The Division of Fire Safety is looking for a person who shares these values to be part of our team of Elevator and Amusement Ride Inspectors. Division of Fire Safety Elevator and Amusement Ride Inspectors are ASME Qualified Elevator Inspectors (QEI), as well as certified through the National Association of Amusement Ride Officials (NAARSO), to ensure registration and compliance, and conduct safety inspections and accident/incident investigations for; elevators, escalators, moving walks, lifts, dumbwaiters and/or amusement rides and related equipment with state law, national codes, and rules and regulations.

    Job Description:

    An employee in this class independently performs and observes annual safety inspections and testing of elevators, escalators, moving walks, lifts, dumbwaiters, amusement rides, and related equipment to ensure public safety and to monitor compliance with state laws, rules, regulations, codes, and standards enforced by the Division of Fire Safety.

    Applicant must live or be willing to move to the following counties within 90 days of starting employment: Jackson, Platte, Clay, Ray, Lafayette, Johnson or Cass. If outside of the listed counties, the application will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may be approved by the Division Director.

    Work also involves:

    • Identifying potential inspection sites and locating unregistered elevator-related equipment.
    • Inspecting new, existing and altered elevator-related equipment to ensure it is in compliance.
    • Investigating accidents or failures involving any type of elevator-related equipment.
    • Overseeing independent state-licensed inspectors.
    • Reviewing plans of new/altered elevator-related equipment.
    • Conducting informational seminars and reviewing variance requests.
    • Duties also include providing technical assistance to contractors, architects, engineers, equipment manufacturers, building owners and the public.


    Assignments are completed with independence, receiving minimal direction from the Deputy Chief and other administrative superior(s) through reports, conferences, staff meetings, training, technical updates and consultative personal contact.

    Qualifications and Requirements:

    • Four years of experience in the mechanical and/or electrical trades, including at least one year that involved the design, installation, maintenance, repair, and/or inspection of elevators; and possession of a high school diploma or GED certificate.
      • (Post-secondary training or education in mechanical or electrical engineering, electronics or closely related area at an accredited college or university or acceptable continuing education provided by the elevator industry may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to two years of the stated general experience.)
    • Ability to possess an American Society of Mechanical Engineers Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) Certificate within two (2) years.
    • Ability to possess a National Association of Amusement Ride Officials (NAARSO) Level 1 certification, or certification of Amusement Ride Inspector with the American Industry Manufacturing and Suppliers (AIMS), or equivalent certification as specified by the Division of Fire Safety within two (2) years.
    • Ability to pass physical and psychological examinations as prescribed by the Division of Fire Safety.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Considerable knowledge of state laws, regulations, and rules related to the use, construction, installation, and repair of elevators, escalators and all related equipment.
    • Considerable knowledge of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators and the American National Standards Institute.
    • Possess basic knowledge of the requirements of NFPA70, National Electrical Code, and Article 525 - Carnivals, circuses, fairs, and similar events.
    • Possess basic knowledge of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) requirements for amusement rides and devices.
    • Considerable knowledge of the design, construction, installation, inspection, and repair of elevator, escalator, moving walks, lifts, dumbwaiters, amusement rides and related equipment.
    • Considerable knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, contractors, architects, engineers and safety directors.
    • Ability to travel extensively in the completion of work assignments.
    • Ability to work in an environment that may include factors such as heat, dust, noise, hazardous materials, heights and confined spaces.
    • Ability to perform detailed tasks with minimal supervision.
    • Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders and perform tasks involving balance and eye-hand and eye-foot coordination.
    • Ability to independently plan and schedule work activities to achieve established goals.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and to prepare detailed reports of inspection findings.


    The salary indicated represents a base pay rate. If the individual selected or the position is eligible for a pay differential (e.g., shift, security, or years of service), it will be added to the total compensation in your paycheck. A pay differential does not raise your base pay.
