Job Location: This position will be located at 930 Wildwood Dr., Jefferson City, Missouri.

    Why you’ll love this position:

You will be joining a team of professionals dedicated to protecting public health at contaminated sites across the state. This team evaluates potential health risks from exposure to hazardous substances in the environment, makes health-protective recommendations regarding actions needed to reduce any potential risks, and educates communities about the possible health effects of exposure to those hazardous substances. In addition to the program team, you will work with state and national partners including the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, and many others. This position also performs activities for our Private Drinking Water (private wells) program, providing guidance and technical assistance to citizens and local public health agencies on well testing options and analysis interpretation. This is a technical position responsible for research, investigation, and scientific evaluation of potential health risks. We are seeking a professional with the ability to independently review, evaluate, and synthesize environmental sampling data and chemical toxicity data and the ability to communicate complex scientific information clearly to lay audience in both written and verbal forms.

The salary indicated represents a base pay rate. If the individual selected or the position is eligible for a pay differential (e.g., shift, security, or years of service), it will be added to the total compensation in your paycheck. A pay differential does not raise your base pay.

    • Review and comment on complex technical and scientific documents pertaining to contaminated site investigations.
    • Conduct human health risk assessments which are technical documents that evaluate potential risks of exposure to hazardous substances in the environment and are used in decision-making for site cleanups. Generate public health assessments/consultations which are public documents that identify possible harmful exposures and recommend actions needed to protect public health. Knowledge of evaluating environmental sampling data and chemical toxicity data and writing technical or public reports would be an advantage.
    • Provide technical and scientific assistance and consultation to risk management agencies in development of intervention strategies, control measures, and cleanups in communities with contaminated sites.
    • Represent the department at technical meetings on hazardous waste sites and participate/engage in stakeholder workgroups with respect to regulatory and human health risk-related issues.
    • Represent the department at public meetings and respond to public health questions.
    • Provide guidance to citizens on private drinking water well testing and results and provide training and technical assistance to local public health agencies on private drinking water-related issues.

    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in the biological, chemical, or physical sciences and 0-4 years of relevant experience (Substitutions may be allowed).
    • A high level of commitment and ability to work in a team environment
    • Possess excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
    • Ability to meet deadlines

Lack of post-secondary education will not be used as the sole basis denying consideration to any applicant.
