    The Position

    Tax Examiners are responsible for licensing/registration, collecting taxes and fees, and assisting taxpayers to ensure compliance with the applicable tax and registration statutes.

    Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

    This position is located in our Reno CDL DMV Office within the Customer Services Division, Motor Carrier Unit and is responsible for ensuring compliance with Nevada's Fuel Tax laws for special fuel users and motor fuel suppliers, maximizing tax revenue collection and distribution. The unit also registers all commercial vehicles, conducts audits of interstate carriers, fuel users, and fuel suppliers, and enforces the International Registration Plan (IRP) and International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) through customer service, education, and equitable law administration. This position requires meeting strict deadlines, multitasking, problem solving, and assisting customers in person, by phone, and via email. The Tax Examiner assists commercial motor carriers with special fuel tax returns, licensing, and annual renewals by applying IFTA, IRP, and Federal Motor Carrier regulations. Duties include reviewing and approving documentation for fuel usage refunds/exemptions, processing registration and titling of commercial vehicles, and calculating taxes, refunds, penalties, interest, and sanctions for delinquent accounts. Under the authority of NRS 239B.010.1(b), the DMV utilizes NRS 205.4605 - 205.810, NRS 293.504, NRS 293.5045, 6 CFR 37.45, 49 CFR 1572.103, and 49 CFR 384.228 as criteria to obtain a FBI fingerprint clearance check on current and prospective employees.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience in bookkeeping, collections, or the interpretation and application of policies, regulations and/or legal requirements equivalent to an Administrative Assistant III or Accounting Assistant III in Nevada State service; OR Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of experience as stated above; OR one year of experience as a Tax Examiner I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Notes Positions in this series may require agency specific education and/or experience that will be identified at the time of recruitment. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
