Examples of DutiesDuties may include but are not limited to:- Provides leadership to and direct supervision of Sergeants in assigned location of the Sheriff's Operation.
- Responsible for evaluating staff performance to ensure accountability and efficiency of work performed throughout the operation.
- Understands the mission and philosophy of the Sheriff's Department and leads their staff utilizing these fundamental principles.
- Effectively manages staff and develops them through coaching and mentoring.
- Due to nature of a 24/7 operation, may be required to work variable days and/or shifts.
- Oversight of the care and maintenance of departmental equipment.
- Reviews reports of information and other material gathered by subordinates and provides feedback as necessary.
- Has responsibility for coordinating and overseeing the work of the assigned division with other divisions of the department
- Assists in the development and administration of the budget and helps insure operation within its constraints.
- Works with Sergeants to schedule staff and assignments
- Provides effective communication, leadership and direction to subordinates and remedies potential problems.
- Takes necessary action when alerted of emergency and potential dangerous situations
- Develops good public relations.
If assigned to Sheriff-Operations may also: - Plan, assigns and supervises the activities of law enforcement and other personnel in the assigned geographical area
- Supervises and conducts investigations, interviews and interrogations
- Supervises and participates in collecting, recording and holding evidence
- May occasionally go on patrol or work in the assigned area of supervision to instruct subordinate personnel
- Ensures proper preparation of material for court
- Prepares a variety of oral reports.
If assigned to Sheriff-Corrections may also :- Initiates, develops and implements programs and activities designed to increase efficiency and productivity of the facility and improve the care and custody of inmates.
- Assists in the development of the long and short range goals and objectives of the facility.
- Makes recommendations and implements activities designed to accomplish facility goals.
- Insures compliance with departmental and institutional procedures and regulations.
- Help resolve inmate problems.
- Insures that safety procedures are followed, violations are corrected and that the facility remains in compliance with existing laws and regulations.
- Inspects facility for proper operation, deterioration of equipment and security of the institution and takes measures to have problems corrected.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Lieutenant Assigned to Operations Experience :
Two (2) years of supervisory experience equivalent to a Sheriff Sergeant in Merced County.
Certificate :
Possession of a current and valid advanced and supervisory certificates issued by the State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training
Education: Equivalent to graduation from High School and completion of forty five (45) college units. An AA, Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree in Business, Administration, Criminal Justice or closely related field is desirable.
License :
Possess a valid California driver's license at time of appointment and maintain.
Performance: Successful Performance Evaluations over the past five (5) years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Lieutenant Assigned to Corrections Experience :
Two (2) years of supervisory experience equivalent to a Sheriff Sergeant or Correctional Sergeant in Merced County.
Certificate :
Must complete Basic Jail Operations Course and Supervisor's Course approved by the Standards and Training for Corrections within one year from date of appointment as Lieutenant.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from High School and completion of forty five (45) college units. An AA, Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree in Business, Administration, Criminal Justice or closely related field is desirable.
License :
Possess a valid California driver's license at time of appointment and maintain.
Performance: Successful Performance Evaluations over the past five (5) years.

HOLIDAYS & LEAVES
MANAGEMENT LEAVE
May receive, depending upon classification, 96 hours per Fiscal Year (prorated for the time remaining in the fiscal year).
VACATION
10 days the first 5 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 160 hours), 15 days in the second 5 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 240 hours), and 20 days after 10 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 320 hours). Optional annual sell back of a portion of accumulated vacation leave hours (maximum - 40 hours).
SICK LEAVE
0.0625 hours sick leave for each paid regularly scheduled work hour. 16 days (130 hours per year) with unlimited accumulation. Optional annual buy back of a portion of accumulated sick leave hours upon meeting certain criteria.
HOLIDAYS
Twelve paid holidays annually plus two optional holidays.
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE
Five (5) regularly scheduled consecutive workdays.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION
The County offers a 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. Employees choose their investment funds and can make pretax contributions to the plan up to the maximum allowable.
MERCED COUNTY EMPLOYEE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION The retirement plan is a defined benefit plan administered pursuant to the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937 and other provisions of the California Government Code. MCERA members also pay into Social Security.The applicable benefit formula is dependent upon your hire date with an MCERA employer; yourpension amount will be determined by your age, years of service and final compensation amount.
