Position Description Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. The Generation Electrical Engineering Team is looking for an energetic and collaborative leader with strong supervisory skills and a strong engineering background in electrical generation. The successful candidate will lead a group of engineers working on Capital Improvement Projects and will respond to Operation and Maintenance requests from City Light generation facilities. These positions are also responsible for several NERC reliability standards. A strong background and knowledge of Hydro Generation, Plant Automation, Relay Protection and High Voltage Equipment is highly desired. The Electrical Power Systems Engineering Supervisor position oversees the engineering work of his/her team in the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of electrical equipment, controls and protections systems for electrical generating plants and transmission equipment at Seattle’s hydroelectric facilities. These positions are overtime eligible, and the City of Seattle offers a generous benefits package. The successful candidate must be willing and able to travel to beautiful and scenic hydro generating facilities in the State of Washington. This position will report to the Manager of Electrical Engineering. Job Responsibilities Here is more about what you’ll be doing: Supervise electrical engineers, specialists and other professionals responsible for performing complex and difficult professional electrical engineering work in the planning, design, construction, commissioning, operating and maintenance of hydroelectric generation facilities, general plant facilities, and other comparable projects. This includes: Working cohesively with other engineering supervisors and the unit manager to establish priorities and manage both O&M and Capital project activities. Coordinating the technical functions of various generation projects assigned to this work group. Participating in studies to determine the need and feasibility of proposed projects. Developing and presenting proposals for generation projects to gain approval. Cooperating with Project Managers to prepare budgets and schedules. Serving as a mentor to other electrical engineers providing guidance and support. Managing personnel matters, such as leave schedules, performance appraisals, hiring, and other administrative tasks. Managing NERC compliance with reliability standards, both Operation and Protection Standards and Cyber Security Standards that apply to Generating Plants. Making presentations and acting as team leader on special projects as assigned. Performing other duties of a comparable level as assigned. Qualifications Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has: This class requires a total of eight years' experience: Six years professional electrical power systems engineering experience equivalent to the Electrical Power Systems Engineer level. An additional two years supervisory, lead or project management experience is required to be a supervising Principal Electrical Power Systems Engineer . To perform the technical expert work of this classification requires an additional two years advanced experience with defining, interpreting and organizing major system-wide transmission or distribution projects that involve multiple jurisdictions and complex engineering circumstances. A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering is also required. A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering may be substituted for one year of experience. Certification/License: Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility. Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington. Work Environment/Physical Demands: Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment. Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, high voltage energized equipment and work in or near construction sites. May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Overnight travel may be required. Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities: Experience working with hydroelectric generators and associated equipment, Supervisory Control, and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, protective relaying schemes, and high voltage equipment. Experience working on Plant Automation Systems, PLC programming and HMI development. The ability to perform relay coordination studies and design relay protection schemes for generators and transmission systems is highly desirable. Knowledge of and direct experience with the NERC Reliability Standards is desirable. Experience with and an understanding of good customer service standards. Good interpersonal, technical writing and oral communications skills. Willingness to learn and accept responsibility, comply with safety rules and regulations, work efficiently, effectively and independently.
