SUMMARY OF POSITIONS Under direct supervision of the Assistant Recreation Supervisor, the Day Camp Counselor implements various summer camp and general recreation activities for children seven (7) to thirteen (13) years old. Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Plan, organize and implement various summer camp activities for children ages 7 to 13 (i.e. sports, arts and crafts, nature activities, music, drama, field trips and cookouts). Lead, supervise and conduct classes and activities. Supervise children properly and respond immediately during emergencies, including administering first aid as necessary. Assist in control of equipment and supplies. Maintain attendance, discipline and other records. Effectively communicate with children, parents/guardians, bus drivers, and the public. Set-up and take down equipment, may require lifting up to 75 pounds (i.e. ice chests, equipment, etc.). Drives van for field trips. Arrive to work every day, on time as scheduled. Description CAMP COUNSELOR (Casual/Seasonal) (Recreation Assistant Job Code 9325) Note: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). The City of Sunnyvale is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in summer employment to assist with recreation programs serving youth and teens from 5 to 14 years old. The summer recreation programs are held at various parks and schools throughout the City of Sunnyvale. Essential Job Functions (May include, but are not limited to, the following): Organize and lead recreation activities including arts and crafts, sports, and games. Supervise participants, teen volunteers, field trips, swim days, special events, and all activities held at camp. Take attendance, and assist with record-keeping. Issue, maintain, and store equipment and supplies. Interact and communicate effectively with children, parents, caregivers, volunteers, and City staff; Ensure the safety and well-being of program participants and teen volunteers. Attend staff trainings and meetings. WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires regular sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work-related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push, pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds is also required.
