Classification Instructional Support Technician II About Cal State East Bay Cal State East Bay's beautiful main campus is located in the Hayward hills with panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay shoreline. About the Position PLEASE NOTE: This is a 11/12 pay plan position. The incumbent will work 11 months out of the year with the salary spread over 12 months. The month off will be mid-June to mid-July of each year. This position is responsible for the support of specialized electronic arts teaching and production laboratories and multimedia facilities in the Department of Art in its undergraduate and graduate program. The creative disciplines of electronic art and multimedia require work with specialized computing hardware and software in order to teach, research, develop, and execute expressive media works. Knowledge of and experience with the use of this specialized electronic art and multimedia hardware and software is common to faculty within the programs who teach and produce expressive media works. However, the support of these necessary components to electronic art and multimedia production is beyond their duties and requires specially trained and knowledgeable support staff. This staff position is charged with providing technical and non-technical support to Department of Art students and faculty engaged in the production of expressive works and their course deliverables ensuring the entire workflow of media production runs smoothly in, for example, classroom teaching, digital art lab use, network computing, equipment management, and hardware and software research/requisition. In addition, this position may require close consultation and collaboration with staff in other academic departments and campus IT. In addition, the emphasis on creative expression in these teaching and production environments calls for well-developed digital media creative skills and creative process aptitude as desirable qualifications for this position. Employee receives direction from the Chair of the Art Department and the Graduate Coordinator. The employee also receives requests for service directly from faculty of these programs. While working independently, the employee is expected to exercise good judgment with respect to prioritizing conflicting tasks, maintaining facilities in a safe and secure manner, and following the directives, policies, and mission of the Department, its Programs, and their Directors. Responsibilities Multimedia Production Facilitation In concert with staff from the Department of Art, and possibly other academic departments and campus IT, facilitate student and faculty expressive media works, projects, and their associated deliverables such as interactive art works, geo-location aware hardware/software, expressive media works (e.g., live action and animated films, electronic art recordings, digital photography, computer games), and streaming media productions. Research, setup/install, and maintain specialized hardware needs as articulated by students and faculty such as (but not limited to) programmable microcontrollers and boards, machine vision cameras (over network, if necessary), multiple output video cards and necessary hardware upgrades to accommodate them, or proprietary alpha and beta media hardware used from a manufacturer in special research test cases. Research, setup/install, and maintain software frameworks, libraries, and development environments. Setup/install, maintain and provide access to media production workflows that combine software such as (but not limited to) Adobe Creative Suite with hardware such as digital video decks, digital audio interfaces, video rendering clusters, and computing clusters. Research and report on the potential requisition of digital media hardware and software specific to a particular departmental need. Research and contact appropriate vendors of multimedia hardware and software with questions relating to creative media works currently being researched, produced, or executed by students or faculty. Compile detailed bids from vendors of digital media hardware and software with an emphasis on explication of bid line-items and possible alternatives, when available or appropriate. Electronic Arts Facilities Management Configure and integrate specialized electronic art production hardware such as video cameras, digital still cameras, video devices, audio devices, microphones, mixers, scanners, and professional level printers with computing hardware and software. Connect and configure electronic art computers (CPUs) to various pieces of specialized video and audio production hardware, scanners, and graphics production printer for in-class instructional, as well as student and faculty production activities. Regularly assess and maintain the operating condition of production computers with connectivity to the network and to specialized server environments. Physically install, move, and remove electronic art computers (CPUs) or coordinate with ITS when needed. Requisition necessary electronic art production and multimedia hardware such as video cameras, digital still cameras, video devices, audio devices, microphones, mixers, scanners, and professional level printers and concomitant software for graphic design, multimedia, animation, video editing, and other digital media production uses. Maintain a clean and safe teaching and creative production environment in the electronic arts facilities. Log security system access codes/cards and their assignees. Successful installation and upgrading of electronic arts production software, computer (CPU) hardware, and attendant peripherals such as (but not limited to) video decks, scanners, and professional level printers. Quarterly creation, distribution, and installation of ghost (disk clone) images for computers in the student learning and production laboratories. Connect and configure video editing and other multimedia equipment, software, and other peripheral graphics production equipment such as (but not limited to) scanners and professional level printers. Keep detailed inventory of all hardware and software and their condition; assess repairs or upgrades as necessary. Maintain all hardware, software, ancillary equipment, and media equipment cabling in an operational state, troubleshoot problems, and arrange for outside service if necessary. Lead Work Collaborate with support staff in the Department of Art to direct student workers to provide electronic art production lab services, and support staff, faculty, and students. Recruit, train, and mentor student workers to develop their technical skills and customer service practices within electronic arts and multimedia facilities, and in particular in print production equipment & procedures and in operating the student equipment check-out system. Assess student assistants to ensure electronic arts facility policies are being followed and enforced. Technical User Support Provide support to students and faculty needing assistance with specialized electronic arts production hardware and software located in electronic arts facilities, faculty offices, and classrooms and not covered by the University Service Desk. Respond promptly to requests for assistance from faculty, staff, and students. Process and prioritize service and support response to ensure that instruction in electronic arts production is met. Configure specialized hardware and software connected to smart classroom computers under the control of the Department of Art (and not covered by Classroom Delivery). Provide support and resources to ensure ADA compliance in the computer labs and studios. Planning and Coordination Carry out and implement the directives and policies of the Chair of the Department of Art and the Director of the Graduate Program through the identification and providing of technical support where needs emerge due to inherent changes in technological advances. Document established standards for electronic arts production and multimedia hardware, software, and computers derived by faculty (or in conversation with them). Evaluate, purchase, upgrade, and maintain electronic arts production and multimedia software and hardware. Network and Server Liaison Ensure servers and network-dependent applications such as license server authenticated systems, rendering farms, pedagogically-necessitated file share systems, and web-accessible applications are administered and maintained. Regularly assess and report on the condition of network hardware, connectivity, and services for assigned facilities. Work with ITS to troubleshoot and resolve network and server related problems. Consult and act on policies that ensure compliance with university network and computing policies. Minimum Qualifications Knowledges and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles of performing support services. Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline and the curriculum. Knowledge of the materials and supplies in the curriculum and the curriculum and their uses. Ability to plan, organize, and schedule activities. Ability to operate technical equipment related to the discipline. Ability to maintain records. Ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment. Experience: Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned. Or Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Or Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience. Required Qualifications Knowledge of Mac OS and Windows computer operating systems. Knowledge of specialized multimedia hardware (e.g. video, audio, microcontrollers, 3D printers, large scale 2D printers). Experience with recruiting, hiring, and supervising temporary workers. Familiarity with server administration and networking configuration. Digital media creative skills.
