The Position This is the journey-level classification in the Engineering Technician Series. Positions at this level perform technical engineering work of a difficult nature, including producing finished drawings from design sketches or field notes, acting as inspector on limited public works or utility projects or improvements, and making difficult algebraic and trigonometric computations. Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following: Ensures Departmental services are provided with the highest level of customer service and ethical standards. Assist in or direct preparation of drawings, specifications, estimates and contract documents for various improvements including street, alley, sewers, storm drains, traffic, water, electric, and other civil engineering projects using computer aided design and drafting software. Update charts, maps and plans using computer aided design and drafting software. Assist in or direct inspection of construction work for compliance with plans and specifications on various municipal utility and capital improvements and make field checks. Check and reduce survey, hydrographic, topographic and other field data to maps, profiles, cross sections, or other forms of compilations. Checks legal documents, easements and subdivision maps. Prepare and check permanent plans for electric utility, public works, traffic engineering, and water utility projects and improvements by drawing plans and contour maps from topographic survey notes, balancing traverses, and making algebraic and trigonometric computations using a computer or calculator. Assist in or direct preparation of project cost estimates including determining quantities and analyzing costs of materials. Assist at public counter answering questions of a technical nature and explaining City policies and established procedures. Maintains detailed records. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe efficient manner. Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires. Minimum Requirements Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of: Basic mathematics, algebra and trigonometry. Computer. Design and construction practices. This position is located in Las Vegas, in the Construction Division, Crew 901.After completing training sessions, the incumbent will work in the field performing required inspections, testing, and surveying; complete field and office work to assure contractor's work is documented per the specifications and quantities for prompt contractor payment. Training and certifications will be available for this role. Specific to this roll as Engineering Technicians perform a broad range of duties involving technical engineering work in support of professional engineers including engineering calculations to determine quantities for payment (volume, area, tonnage), land surveying ( stakeout of roadway grade, control, topographic mapping), materials and soils testing ( concrete, asphalt, aggregates) , construction inspection. Limited work in other areas like; roadway design, right-of-way engineering, planning, in support of civil or related professional engineering work.
