Mechanical & Electrical Diagnostics: Identifies mechanical and electrical issues on fleet vehicles and equipment, including those with alternative fuel and hybrid systems. Component Repair & Replacement: Removes, installs, adjusts, and rebuilds a wide range of components on gas, diesel, and alternative-fuel powered vehicles and equipment. This includes work on engines, transmissions, hydraulic or air brakes, clutches, differentials, fuel systems, generators, ignition systems, hydraulic systems, charging systems, heating and air conditioning units, and other components. Technical Research: Reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, and other related materials to perform work assignments and stay updated on current technology. Tool & Equipment Operation: Operates and maintains a full set of hand, power, and shop tools, as well as computerized diagnostic and test equipment used in the trade. Vehicle Testing: Performs road tests on vehicles or equipment to ensure the reliability and accuracy of repairs made. Welding & Cutting: Performs welding, brazing, soldering, and gas cutting as needed. Safety & Cleanliness: Follows safe working practices and maintains a clean and orderly work and shop area. Estimating Repairs: Estimates time and materials needed for repair work. Work Orders: Maintains accurate records for repairs made, materials used, and time worked. NOTE: Work will be Monday - Friday 6:00AM-2:30PM. The selected candidate must possess or obtain a valid Class A commercial driver license during the initial six month period of appointment to this position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must possess all of the following: A valid California Class C driver license Four (4) years of experience in a diesel mechanic apprenticeship program or equivalent, one (1) year of which must have been at the Diesel Equipment Mechanic Apprentice II level performing progressively responsible repairs to diesel-powered equipment. Twelve (12) units of college coursework approved by the Districts or completion of one (1) year of a two-year trade school in diesel mechanic technology or a closely related program may be considered in lieu of one (1) year of the required experience; - OR - Graduation from a two-year trade school in diesel mechanic technology or closely related program may be considered in lieu of two (2) years of the required experience. Introduction The Fleet Mechanic Senior performs skilled maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of automotive and heavy-duty trucks and equipment. Also, they train and perform lead worker responsibilities for lower-level Fleet mechanics and technicians. This recruitment may be used to fill mechanic positions in any of the following areas: Fire/Emergency Vehicles, Solid Waste trucks and Transit buses. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent. Must possess training, education and experience equivalent to seven years of experience as a mechanic in diverse automotive, heavy-duty trucks and equipment, transit buses and/or mobile equipment maintenance and repair. Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona. Must possess, or obtain within six months of hire or promotion, at minimum, a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
