GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION An entry-level technician who assists with troubleshooting, repairing, overhauling, and changing components and performing preventative and corrective maintenance on City-owned vehicles, including heavy and light-duty vehicles and equipment. A successful candidate would be responsible for tire inspection and repair, vehicle preventative maintenance, and service calls to broken-down vehicles. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the supervision of the division supervisor, crew lead, or designated person. SUPERVISION EXERCISED No supervision will be exercised. Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by an auto-shop certificate, trade school certificate, or specialized training related to automotive and diesel mechanics; One (1) year of related experience; or Willingness to obtain within 2-3 years technical certifications from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and/or Emergency Vehicle Technician are preferred and may be required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Valid Arizona Class A Driver's License will be required to possess and maintain a CDL endorsement or ability to obtain within six months of hire. Knowledge of OEM vehicular systems (brakes, suspension, and ABS systems). Performs regular tire inspection, repair, and replacement for City vehicles and equipment. Road tests vehicles and operates equipment to assist in diagnosis, troubleshooting, and confirming repairs. Commutes to locations of vehicles requiring service and repair and performs diagnosis, repairs, or maintenance. Performs regularly scheduled and preventive maintenance on heavy and light-duty vehicles and equipment, including, but not limited to, changing oil filters and lubricants and checking the condition of belts, tires, and suspension per service manuals. Maintains daily work records, material used, and time spent. Maintains an adequate supply of materials, equipment, and tools to fulfill work assignments. Cleans, maintains, and services required equipment and tools used during the performance of work assignments. Keeps work area clean. Will be required to work rotating shifts and on-call. OC San is currently looking to fill the role of a Maintenance Supervisor (Fleet Services). Under direction, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of staff responsible for comprehensive OC San maintenance and repair programs, including treatment plant and recycled water equipment and related facilities, fleet, energy co-generation, wastewater collections, and/or mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation systems; ensures division operations and maintenance functions meet all applicable laws, regulations, and OC San policies; provides complex staff assistance to OC San management in areas of expertise; performs the most technical and complex tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility; and performs duties as assigned. When assigned to Fleet Maintenance: Plans, prioritizes, assigns, supervises, and participates in the work of staff responsible for the overhaul, maintenance, repair, servicing, and troubleshooting of vehicles and heavy equipment; evaluates the economic life, usage, and depreciation of equipment/vehicles. Qualifications & Requirements High school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented by specialized training or 60 semester units of coursework from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education, in construction, business or public administration, maintenance management, or a related field. Six (6) years of progressively responsible work experience in one of the following areas of assignment: pipes and plant facilities, wastewater collection systems, mechanical equipment, facilities maintenance, fleet and heavy equipment, energy co-generation facilities and equipment, preventative maintenance, and/or electrical distribution or instrumentation systems, which may include two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience. Valid California Class C Driver’s License Depending on assignment, must possess or obtain within 12 months of placement in position a: Valid Grade IV Certification from the California Water Environment Association appropriate to area of assignment as determined by OC San; and/or Valid Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) and/or valid Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician (CMRT) from the Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP); and/or valid Maintenance Management Certification (MMC) from Life Cycle Engineering; and/or Certified Automotive Fleet Manager (CAFM) from National Automotive Fleet Association (NAFA); and/or Certified Building Operator (CBO) from the Building Operator Certification entity; and/or Certified Reliability Leader from Reliability Web; or other similar professional maintenance certification as deemed comparable by OC San; and/or Valid hazardous materials endorsement; and a valid manual transmission endorsement. Assignment requires traveling throughout the County to various work sites to lube and service equipment and to perform other required maintenance. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma/GED (General Education Degree). Three (3) years successful experience in the heavy equipment vehicle maintenance and repair area as a Trades Helper or when filled from outside, three (3) years’ experience as an Equipment Mechanic or related field involving the maintenance and repair including overhauls of automotive and heavy equipment vehicles and related equipment. OOR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications. SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENT Must pass drug screen post offer. Must possess a valid driver’s license for operation of motor vehicles on Arizona roads at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed in this position. Must possess the ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License within a six (6) month period from hire date. Must provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County. Tools are to be provided and maintained at the employee's cost. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of: Methods, procedures, materials, equipment, and tools used for the maintenance and repair of automotive and heavy equipment vehicles and related equipment to include heavy gasoline and diesel powered equipment and industrial and construction equipment. Heavy equipment hydraulics, electrical systems, drive lines, gas and diesel engine, steering, cooling and air conditioning system and other related vehicle components of heavy equipment. Skill in: Performing all phases of automotive and equipment major repair including overhauls. Safe, effective operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in automotive and heavy equipment vehicles and related equipment diagnosis, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, rebuilding, and overhauling. Communicating and maintaining professionalism with the public, co-workers, and work contacts. Ability to: Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical problems of heavy equipment vehicles. Safely and effectively service, maintain and repair assigned vehicles and equipment in accordance with standard repair, maintenance, operation, and safety procedures. Overhaul and rebuild gas and diesel engines and other related components of automotive and heavy equipment vehicles and related equipment. Interpret and apply established guidelines and procedures as provided in shop and service manuals and related documentation. Follow and interpret written and oral instructions and data generated from diagnostic and troubleshooting equipment. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel and personnel of other County departments. Fulfill physical requirements of work assignments to include moderate lifting of 20 - 50 pounds, utilizing physical exertion required to perform assignment and performing work assignments with the use of tools and equipment in cramped and contorted positions and performing work assignments in various terrain and in varying weather conditions including exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures.
