Description: Gardening Specialist - Performance Turf Specialist (Gardening Specialist) Compensation and Benefits Anticipated Hiring Salary: $3,544 per month Full CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,544 - $5,782 per month This is a full-time (equivalent to 40 hours per week), probationary, non-exempt position. Job Summary Under general supervision, the Gardening Specialist for performance turf executes a combination of specialized work in an assigned area of campus which encompasses daily routine inspection, maintenance, treatment, and preparation of athletic field related grounds and facilities, sanding fields and maintaining safe clay to turf transition areas, base paths, infields, and pitching mounds. This specialized work requires the same level of skills, knowledge and abilities that are required of specialists in each of these areas. The specialized work must be performed at least 50% of the time under general supervision of someone above the Lead Groundsworker, and independently of any specialists working in the assigned area. In addition, for at least 50% of their work time, Gardening specialists perform specialized skilled gardening activities. This position may require after hours and weekend work. Key Qualifications Thorough knowledge of the methods, grass varieties, tools and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and caring for athletic fields including proper turf grass and infield management. Knowledge in large irrigation systems, drainage systems and athletic field layouts and striping. General knowledge in ornamental flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees. General knowledge of the composition and structure of soil, Ph factors of soils, compatibility and incompatibility factors between soil and plants, difference between plant mixes, and erosion control. Skill/ Ability to: Ability to identify, diagnose and treat plant and lawn disease, and correct nutrient deficiencies. Prepare freehand sketches and make recommendations for possible improvements in landscaping within the assigned area. Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. Follow oral and written instructions. Utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination. Learn to skillfully operate small vehicles and power-driven grounds equipment. Job Summary Under general supervision, the Gardening Specialist for performance turf executes a combination of specialized work in an assigned area of campus which encompasses daily routine inspection, maintenance, treatment, and preparation of athletic field related grounds and facilities, sanding fields and maintaining safe clay to turf transition areas, base paths, infields, and pitching mounds. This specialized work requires the same level of skills, knowledge and abilities that are required of specialists in each of these areas. The specialized work must be performed at least 50% of the time under general supervision of someone above the Lead Groundsworker, and independently of any specialists working in the assigned area. In addition, for at least 50% of their work time, Gardening specialists perform specialized skilled gardening activities. This position may require after hours and weekend work. Key Qualifications Thorough knowledge of the methods, grass varieties, tools and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and caring for athletic fields including proper turf grass and infield management. Knowledge in large irrigation systems, drainage systems and athletic field layouts and striping. General knowledge in ornamental flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees. General knowledge of the composition and structure of soil, Ph factors of soils, compatibility and incompatibility factors between soil and plants, difference between plant mixes, and erosion control. Skill/ Ability to: Ability to identify, diagnose and treat plant and lawn disease, and correct nutrient deficiencies. Prepare freehand sketches and make recommendations for possible improvements in landscaping within the assigned area. Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. Follow oral and written instructions. Utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination. Learn to skillfully operate small vehicles and power-driven grounds equipment. Operate various tools and a variety of equipment used in turf and landscape maintenance work. Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire and a demonstrated good driving record. Education and Experience Three years in the care and maintenance of municipal or institutional landscapes with large recreational and/or athletic field lawn areas, two years of which shall have been working in turf management and preparation of athletic fields. Experience to include general landscape maintenance, repair and modification of irrigation systems and specialized pest and/or spray control work. Specialized Skills: Possession of the appropriate California Department of Pesticide Regulation license to perform pest control work (Qualified Applicator License or Qualified Applicator Certificate). Preferred Skills: Three years of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas in an institutional setting. Five years of experience in full range of horticultural work on performance turf and play fields or golf course.
